Cook Delighted With ‘First Class’ Tyrer

Everton goalkeeper Harry Tyrer has played every minute of this season’s National League for top-of-the-table Chesterfield.

In June, the 21-year-old joined the Spireites on a season-long-loan, and manager Paul Cook has been “delighted” with what he’s seen so far from the Crosby-born stopper.

“From the minute he came through the door, his appetite to train and his work ethic have been absolutely first class,” said Cook, speaking to evertonfc.com about the progression of Tyrer. “In terms of goalkeeping in first teams, he’s very young, so he’s learning on the job. But his overall form has been excellent.

“I think the biggest compliment you can pay Harry, is how quickly he’s settled into our environment, and how quickly he’s integrated into the rest of the squad.

“As a goalkeeper, every day, he looks to get better, and Harry absolutely is improving. He’s taking everything in his stride, and we’re really delighted with him and we’re very thankful to Everton for allowing us to play a part in Harry’s development.”

Tyrer has been with the Toffees since the age of seven, impressing Academy coaches over the years to earn a professional contract with the Club in January 2020.

During that season, he started featuring in Premier League 2 fixtures, where he became a regular for Everton Under-21s over the next two campaigns, before sealing a loan move to Chester, where he made 47 league appearances in the 2022/23 season.

Cook described how his link with Everton Loans Pathway Manager James Vaughan enabled Tyrer’s transfer to Chesterfield to come to fruition.

“Our first-team coach Gary Roberts has a good relationship James (Vaughan),” Cook explained. “James also played under me at Wigan Athletic, so already there was a relationship there as well.

“We were in the market for a goalkeeper, and Harry was put forward as one of the options. We watched a lot of his clips from last year at Chester, and obviously spoke to James a lot during the summer. All parties thought it would be a really good progression for Harry to take in his pursuit of, one day, going back to Everton and hopefully being the number one.”

Currently sat three points clear at the top of the National League, Chesterfield have won 12 of their 15 games, outscoring the rest of the league with 36 goals.

Everton's Tyrer has featured in every minute of the league campaign - a run which included a Player of the Match performance against Maidenhead United at the end of September.

After a third-placed finish last season, Cook insists Tyrer, who he labels as a “flawless character”, has been a significant factor in the progression of his Spireites.

“He’s been a massive part of the results so far," he added. "We conceded a few goals at the start of the season, but in the past three games, we’ve kept three clean sheets, so that’s credit to Harry and also the rest of the team. When you take players from big clubs, especially younger players, it’s natural to worry about their work ethic and desire to train. Harry is absolutely top in those things. He works so hard.

“A big thing that we’ve noticed is his confidence growing. In pre-season, he gave a penalty away against Derby County. Whenever anyone starts at a new club, there are always nerves, but that’s quickly been eradicated now. Harry is very comfortable in himself and he’s very comfortable within the team. He’s playing in front of crowds of 8,000 regularly at Chesterfield now, so that’s good for him.

“He’s absolutely a great lad, whose character is flawless. Within that, he’s got a physical presence. He will come for crosses; he’s a good shot stopper; he’s a good talker. In my opinion, all he needs now is to accumulate games as he’s going along and gain that vital experience over the next couple of years. That’ll see him progress to be a really top goalkeeper.”
