Harrison On Factors Behind Blues' Belief

Jack Harrison has identified the Everton squad's mentality and talent as key factors to an impressive response during their last outing.

The Blues recovered from defeat against Luton Town by bouncing back to beat Bournemouth 3-0 last time out – the Toffees' biggest win of the season so far.

While the nature of the victory was impressive it was, perhaps, not all too surprising from the Blues, who have dominated most of their games during the campaign, accumulating the fourth highest non-penalty expected goals figure (14.7) in the Premier League from the second most attempts in the division (133).

Harrison, who scored in his first league start for Everton against Bournemouth, insists the squad have remained positive due to their performances, despite some results going against them.

“It’s been a season where we’ve been a bit unfortunate at times and maybe not got the results we deserved,” said Harrison, speaking to evertonfc.com.

“Sometimes when you don’t get the results, it’s quite easy to get down and negative in the team. We know we’ve been doing the rights things, but it just hasn’t come off here and there.

“We capitalised on those opportunities as a team against Bournemouth. I think the defence worked really hard to keep a clean sheet. On the attacking side – we managed to bring it all together. It was a team performance that we’ve been looking for, for a while now.”

The confidence from such a result, Harrison says, is already backed up by the belief gained from the Blues’ promising displays in previous weeks.

He hopes the home win over the Cherries can provide an important reference point for future games, but acknowledges there is still work to do.

“With the expected goals, we should have a lot more points in the league,” he explained. “I think it’s a credit to the talent we have in the squad that we’re able to continue playing like that.

“It’s important not to get carried away with it. We know there’s a long season ahead of us, but it’s definitely a performance we can look back on and say: ‘We can be more like this.’

“Again, there are a lot of improvements that can still be made. We have to keep pushing as high as we can in the league, and I think we have the potential to do that.”

Harrison’s appearance against Bournemouth was just his second so far in this season’s Premier League. The 26-year-old, who signed on loan from Leeds United in the summer, arrived on Merseyside with a hip injury that ruled him out for the start of the term.

Nevertheless, Harrison is pleased to be back playing, and praised the staff of both Everton and Leeds for aiding him with his recovery.

“It’s been a tough period with my injury,” he added. “Everyone at Leeds was great with my rehab, but changing over can be difficult at times.

“The staff here have been brilliant with me, helping me to get to the condition I’m in now – maybe a little bit before expected. It’s a credit to them, a credit to the staff at Leeds, as well, and a credit to the coaching staff here for providing that opportunity for me.

“It’s something I’ve been working really hard for, and they’ve given me that opportunity. I was really grateful to have the experience against Bournemouth, and I’m hoping to carry on.”
