Dominant Everton Beaten By Leicester

Everton were denied their first points of the Women's Super League season as Leicester City beat the visitors 1-0 on Sunday afternoon.

It was a dominant display from Brian Sorensen's side at the King Power Stadium who twice had the ball in the back of the net through Emma Bissell, only to be denied by the offside flag.

Numerous chances fell to the likes of Martina Piemonte and Lucy Hope, but a cutting edge to the Toffees' finishing mixed in with a stubborn Foxes defence meant the wait for the first league points of the season goes on.

Three changes were made to the side that began the season against Brighton & Hove Albion; with Justine Vanhaevermaet, Emma Bissell and Heather Payne handed their first competitive starts for the Club.

The Blues started on the forefront as Piemonte came close within the opening minute of putting Everton ahead.

The Italian was awarded a yard of space outside of Leicester's box and powerfully struck an effort towards the left side of goal. Leicester's Janina Leitzig quick to react with a diving save.

Eight minutes later, chances fell to Piemonte once again.

Payne - who impressed in her first start for the Toffees - delivered a sliding challenge in the opposition's box and found her Italian teammate. Piemonte struck twice in quick succession, both efforts blocked by the host's defence.

On 37 minutes, the Blues thought they had their breakthrough.

Excellent hold-up play from Piemonte allowed Bissell to run through on goal. The ball arrived into the path of the Blues number 11 who finished into the far corner. However, the flag was raised on the far side.

Injury time in the first half brought a penalty for Everton.

Hanna Bennison played a free-kick into the area as Piemonte was shoved to the ground. The referee immediately pointing to the spot.

Vanhaevermaet stepped up to take and aimed towards the left side of goal. Leitzig matched the effort and denied the Belgian midfielder on her rebounded attempt.

Nevertheless, the Blues continued to grow as they entered the second half and a promising chance again fell to Bissell five minutes after the break.

Hope did well to intercept a pass and send Everton on the attack, the Scot finding Piemonte on the edge of the box.

Drawing the Leicester defence in, Bissell broke along the right side and met Piemonte's ball in. Her effort saved by Leitzig at the near post.

A golden opportunity fell to Hope five minutes later, as she was unmarked and gifted a channel through on goal. Her effort again saved by Leicester's number one.

On 58 minutes, Bennison helped to create another good chance for her side. The Swede whipped the ball in from the left, finding Piemonte who chested the ball down and struck. The Italian's effort agonising arriving wide of the far post.

The Blues' lack of cutting edge would come back to haunt them as Leicester went ahead on 69 minutes.

An interception from Sam Tierney allowed Leicester to break on the counter, the defender playing Lena Petermann through on goal whose finish past Emily Ramsey gave the host's the lead.

Everton continued to press for what would have been a deserving equaliser and thought they had secured it in the 84th minute.

Katrine Veje slid the ball across goal to Bissell's whose shot clattered off the goalkeeper, back off herself and into the net. However, the goal was ruled out for an apparent offside.

Despite a late push, the Toffees were denied a deserved point in their second competitive outing of the season.

A busy week awaits for Brian Sorensen's side who begin their League Cup campaign at Walton Hall Park on Wednesday night against Manchester City before travelling to Anfield to face Liverpool for the Merseyside derby.
