Everton Under-18s overcame a more experienced Fleetwood Town Under-21s side with a 2-0 win at Finch Farm on Thursday afternoon in the first round of the Lancashire Senior Cup.
It was a tight contest with the game level at 0-0 going into the final 20 minutes of the match. But a sublime curled strike from Callum Bates put Leighton Baines' team ahead.
Joel Catesby sealed the victory after a determined run saw him carry the ball from deep inside the Fleetwood half all the way into the penalty area before firing a low effort into the bottom corner.
The young Blues will look to build on that success when back in league action on Saturday 16 September (11am BST) when they welcome Stoke City to Finch Farm.
