Evertonian Tierney Secures First Pro Club Contract

Everton central defender Jack Tierney has agreed his first professional contract, agreeing a two-year deal until the end of June 2025.

A lifelong Evertonian and Season Ticket Member at Goodison Park since the age of five, Tierney joined Everton in 2019 and has progressed to become one of the standout defenders in Leighton Baines’ Under-18s.

Tierney featured in all 11 of Everton’s opening games of last season – starting in 10 - before rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament just before Christmas. He had successful surgery in January and is now firmly on the road to recovery.

After committing his future to the Club, the 18-year-old revealed to evertontv he is hopeful of being back to his best for the new season while sharing his delight at signing his new Everton deal.

“I’m over the moon with this contract,” said Tierney. “Growing up as a local boy and a Blue, it’s every kid’s dream to sign your first professional contract for the club you love, so I am absolutely delighted.

“I go to games home and away, it’s part of my life and I don’t know what I’d do without Everton.”

After the disappointment of his injury last season, Tierney is desperate to make up for lost time and explained how the long-term target of making a Senior Team appearance for his boyhood club gives him added motivation to succeed.

“I want to try to get fit as early on in the season as I can,” he added. “Establish myself and try to get regular Under-21s football and, from then on, push towards the Senior Team.

“You have got to be self-motivated but just the thought of putting on the blue shirt at Goodison or the new stadium one day, it drives you over the line to push that little bit further.”

Tierney was eager to thank those who have helped him along the way in reaching this landmark moment, including Under-18s Head Coach Leighton Baines.

“It’s been great working with him and his staff because of how experienced he is,” he said.

“He’s always been in a situation that you need to know about, his little tips from such a great career. It can just give you that fighting edge over your opposition.”

While focusing on his personal growth off the pitch, Tierney added: “The Academy has helped mature me to become more self-disciplined and just understand the attitude you need; all aspects of your life that are important in and out of football, as well as being a better person in general.

“The Club has all those values and demonstrates them which helps you take it into everyday life.”
