WOMEN'S TEAM

Christiansen's Gratitude For Stellar Career

Izzy Christiansen expressed her sincere thanks to her football family as she calls time on her professional playing career.

The Everton captain led the team out for a final time on Saturday and was applauded by both sets of supporters as she left the field on 62 minutes.

The 31-year-old broke onto the scene in Everton colours 14 years ago and said it was fitting that her final match involved two clubs deeply connected to the midfielder’s career.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better ending to be honest, other than winning the game,” she told evertontv.

“We almost got there in the end, we finished strong.

“The reception from both fans, it’s just completely overwhelming.

“I feel like the luckiest girl in the world to have played this game at this level, with these people.

“When the substitute board came up and my number as well. It was like the world just stopped.

“I saw the number eight and thought ‘this is it'.

“I’m so proud and happy to have played this game.

“I’m pretty lost for words. It’s been overwhelming but thank you.”

Christiansen’s involvement in the women’s game has forever cemented her in the history books.

One of England’s first-ever professional women’s footballers, with over 150 Women’s Super League appearances, and a generational talent who has inspired thousands to achieve their footballing dream.

There are countless achievements for Christiansen, but her part in growing Everton’s stature in the women’s game is something she is immensely proud of.

“There are too many moments [to just pick one],” she continued.

“Honestly, I’m just so lucky to have done this, to have been healthy and to have this opportunity from all the clubs that have employed me, trusted me and obviously Everton for taking me back.

“The progress of this Club over the last three and a half years, it’s definitely improved.

“I feel very proud of playing a part in that. It’s been tough to get there, but I think that we are there now.

“I feel like I’m handing the baton now to a very good runner coming through. I’m very proud of that.”

CHRISTIANSEN RECEIVES HEARTFELT MESSAGES

Midfielder reacts to messages from her Everton teammates upon her retirement.

While she may be hanging up her boots one last time, Christiansen promised this won’t be the last time we see her in the world of football.

“My involvement in the game isn’t over,” she added.

“There are many things ahead, but it will now be in a different capacity.

“I definitely feel like I’ve finished whilst on top.

“I will be one of them (supporters) coming back to Walton Hall Park supporting the team next season and for seasons beyond.

“The supporters have grown as the team has grown and it’s incredibly special.

“This Club is very special, and they deserve nothing but the best. I can’t thank them enough.”
