Gana: We Know What We Need To Do

Idrissa, let's look back to the game against Manchester City. It wasn't the result we wanted but what positives did you take?

No, it's not the result we wanted. We hoped to do better in the game. It’s one of those where you have to put it out of your mind and forget about it. Concentrate on the next challenge and that is the game this weekend.

How difficult or easy is it to do that? To have a mental reset and forget about a game like that and just think about the next one?

I think it wasn’t too difficult to put it out of our minds because, first and foremost, the manager gave us one day off with our families just to put it to bed; get it out of our minds. You have no time to waste in terms of thinking about what’s gone because you’ve got the next challenge, the next match ahead. There are two important games to go between now and the end of the season and, automatically, your thoughts switch to the next game.

How important is it for you to recapture the same sort of feeling you had after that Brighton game? That performance was incredible.

The last defeat came against the league leaders, they’re the top side in the league, so you can always isolate that. Once that’s out of the way you can accept that it was against a tough rival and opponent. That brings you back to focusing on how you can repeat that (Brighton) performance and how we approached that game. We want more of the same.

How would you assess the level of confidence in the players right now?

We are working really hard. We know what we have to do in training to be in the right place physically and mentally. As the match approaches, confidence within the group grows throughout the training sessions.

We can never say what is going to happen on the field once we get out there, but we are going prepared and confident. We will see what happens on the day.

It’s all about you and what you can do in your performances across these last two games. But how much do you look at what the other teams in the relegation battle are doing? Do you think your remaining two games are easier or harder?

I am being totally honest when I say I don’t look at what their fixture list is. Sure, I look at the results and analyse them then. It’s easier if we just focus on what we have got. We know our next two opponents, we know if we win those next two games, it’s in our own hands.

It’s all about concentrating on that. There’s plenty of time to look at the league table once those two matches are done.

We are in control of our destiny. We win our next two games, and then we are in the Premier League next season.

Is it difficult to enjoy playing football under this kind of pressure? You know you have these two games to go, you know destiny is in your own hands, but can you still enjoy it?

I would be lying to say it’s still as enjoyable playing under these circumstances and pressures. But of course, you still enjoy training, you are a bit more relaxed when you are preparing. But this is football, it’s all part and parcel of it.

We know there’s extra pressure, maybe you aren’t quite as relaxed on the field in games because we know what the Club represents to us and the fans. That pressure does weigh on you a little bit when you are playing, but when you do get out on the field, you focus on playing, you relax a little bit and you allow yourself to play.

Wolves have an easier end to the season in terms of pressure, do you have any idea what to expect from them because they have been so up and down recently? Or is it all about what you do?

It is all about us, our preparation and how we go into the game. We need to be 100-per-cent ready like we were against Brighton. We have had decent results under the manager, a setback against Newcastle, but still, we have noticed a difference in the way we are playing and our approach to games since the manager came in. We want to make sure we give a good account of ourselves.

What do you think the deciding factors will be in terms of determining who goes up and who goes down?

Well, it’s whoever has the most points. But it’s also about the desire to get those points and who is willing to fight the hardest I guess – be the team that fights the most.

If it does come down to the last game, you will have your home fans behind you. How much confidence will that give you?

Hopefully, it will be decided before then. We are preparing with everything we have for a very important game on Saturday. Hopefully, if it can be decided before then, we can enjoy that final game with our supporters. If it does go to the last day, we know we have those fans behind us. They have been behind us all season, even when times have been tough. They really are a source of strength for us. Home or away, they get right behind us and push us forward. I think we could draw on that strength in the final game because we know it’s so important that we get the job done.
