What The Papers Say - 16 May

Sean Dyche says he’s been impressed by the development of Dwight McNeil, while praising the Everton winger for his ability to remain impactful - even within a different role against Manchester City.

McNeil now has 10 goal involvements during this campaign, recording seven goals and three assists. The Blues forward has continued to shine in recent outings and Dyche was keen to compliment his performances.

Quoted by the Liverpool ECHO, Dyche discussed McNeil's display against Manchester City.

Asked what he was impressed by, Dyche responded: “Everything. His commitment, his ability to deal with the ball, his ability to be adaptable - he had to play deeper at times because Mason (Holgate) is not a natural full-back then his ability to still be effective in a change of shape.

“He’s been terrific since I’ve been back with him, and I want him to keep enjoying his football but also taking it on. I thought at Brighton he took it on.

“He is a player who is still maturing in my view, and he is grasping and grabbing it and taking things forward and making things happen and that is very pleasing for him and pleasing for us.”

Writing for the Liverpool ECHO, Matt C Jones has been explaining the relegation permutations ahead of Everton’s penultimate game of the Premier League season.

Outlining the impact of three points for the Toffees this weekend, he wrote: “Liverpool's win over Leicester City at the King Power Stadium means Everton can secure their Premier League status as early as next weekend.

“For the Blues, it means a victory in their next match and defeats for Leeds and Leicester in their respective fixtures would give them an unassailable advantage in terms of the relegation battle.

“However, anything other than a win for Everton at Wolves would mean the fight to stay afloat in the top flight would go down to the final day, along with the potential of relegation being out of their hands if Leeds or Leicester were to win their fixtures.”

With that in mind, Ian Wright believes Everton will pick up enough points to avoid relegation and remain in the Premier League for next season.

The Blues are currently 17th in the league table, but are just a single point above Leeds United, who currently occupy 18th.

Former Arsenal star Wright spoke to Premier League Productions about Everton and said: "I think they will look at their two games, I know they have just got beaten by Manchester City, but they will look at those two games, with Wolves how poorly they are playing, at the minute. Bournemouth are safe.

“Then they will get four points out of that, at least."
