Iwobi's Easter Pledge & Everton Commitment

Alex, it's Easter this weekend, and you took the opportunity to do an Easter egg giveaway in Liverpool city centre this week. How important are chances like that for you to give back and where does that passion come from?

It comes from my mum and dad. They sacrificed a lot for me to get into the position I'm in now. Anyone will tell you my dad does everything for everyone before even thinking about himself. It's the way I've been brought up - to help people as much as I can.

The chance to work with Everton In The Community, too. How much do you value those opportunities?

I've done a few things with Everton in the Community in terms of going to food banks and being part of things like the Easter egg hunt. Everton is the People's Club. The Club wants to help people out as much as possible - and that's something that really resonates with me and my friends. It's great to be part of it and we won't stop.

Talk to us about the game against Tottenham which was a battling display topped off by a superb Michael Keane strike. Were you expecting him to do something like that?

Was I expecting it? No. When I saw him driving through, I thought he was kind of looking in my direction and he might play it out wide to me but when I saw it leave his foot I thought, 'Ooo, he's caught that sweet!'... Then I saw it hit the back of the net and I was like 'Ohh!'... I wasn't expecting it, but then I wasn't really shocked either because he does that in training on a regular basis. We do this training shooting exercise from the edge of the box and he often wins it, like eight times out of 10! So when he's taking shots from the edge of the box, none of us are complaining.

How influential has Sean Dyche been since joining the Club, and what impact has he had on you and the team?

He's literally gone to basics and demanded hard work before anything. Obviously, he knows we've got the footballing ability, but he just wants to bring that hard-work feel to the team. He's done that. It starts in training. He demands a lot and that carries through into matches. The main thing for us now is to remain consistent. We're trying to pull away from the situation we're in as fast as we possibly can.

What happened when you first met him?

Dimi [Gray] had actually warned me that he has a firm handshake, so I made sure I gave him a firm handshake and looked into his eyes when I first met him! He's a really nice guy. I think some people think he's scary but he's a good guy. He's got a really good balance... He's got a lot of banter but nobody messes with him!

Is it hard to change your mindset completely when a new manager comes in?

No, not at all. Because we all knew that we were in a sticky situation. So regardless of what manager came in, we just had to fight and put everything into our games. We knew regardless of what manager came in; it was going to be hard work. That’s what everyone is demanding from each other, and it is working.

What about conversations you had with him? What are the key things he wants from you out on the pitch?

When he first came in, we had a few one-to-one chats. With me, he just wanted to see how I’d feel about playing out wide again after being in midfield. He told me he wants me to bring the qualities I showed in midfield out wide. Try to create as many chances as I can, but also show hard work and tracking back. I feel like he wants a lot of that from me, but I am up for the challenge, it’s all for the team.

Is it a case of you don’t mind where you are, just as long as you are out on the pitch?

Yes, I’ve had that all my life. I’ve played in different positions, so it doesn’t faze me. I just have to do the job for the team.

What is your favourite position?

I get asked this a lot. I like playing as a number eight but wherever I am told to play, I will play.

You have played a variety of positions, how important is that versatility you bring to Everton?

It’s something I have to be grateful for. I understand the game. At Everton, I now know I am going to be playing more out wide. Before that, I often didn’t know where I was going to start or whether I was going to be involved. But I know that wherever I am told to play, I am able to produce something for the team. I have the mindset to help the team no matter where I am told to play and give 100%.

With not long left in the season, do you put any targets down for yourself personally?

No, I am not someone who usually does that. People ask if I have a target in terms of goals, but I don’t set myself anything. I literally just go into any game thinking I am going to try and create as many chances for my teammates as I can and hopefully get a goal. But I don’t set targets for the season.

In terms of the whole season, it’s been pretty strange. Have you found it a bizarre season in terms of some of the results we have seen?

We don’t want to be where we are, but I am sure for neutral fans it has been an exciting season. For us, we want to get away from where we are.

There aren't many games to go. It is tough to predict what is going to happen. Are you confident Everton can climb the table and avoid danger?

Yes, we see the quality in the changing room every day. We see it in training. We just have to make sure we stay consistent and perform like we have been doing. Especially here last time out when we were down to 10 men but we kept creating chances. If we do, I am sure we will get the results to come our way. Let’s see.
