Nico Sorensen: We Can Build On Derby Display

Nicoline Sorensen believes Everton can take confidence from their performance at Goodison Park, but urged her teammates to continue to improve over the remainder of the season.

It was a thrilling Merseyside derby as the Blues were held 1-1 against Liverpool in front of a record home crowd.

While disappointed that the team couldn’t secure maximum points, the Dane accepted a point was a fair result.

“I’m annoyed that we didn’t get the win,” she told evertontv. “But if you look at the game overall, it is probably a fair result with the amount of chances they had and the amount of chances we had.

“I think we had some really good moments today that we can definitely take and build on.

“That’s what matters to us is that we keep progressing with the season.

“Today was another good performance.

“Courtney [Brosnan] was brilliant again today. Some of the saves she made was unreal.

“There’s still loads of work to do, but there’s some really good moments and that’s why we need to take with us.”

It was Sorensen’s first experience playing against the Blues’ local rivals after unfortunately missing out on the emphatic win at Anfield earlier this season.

She excelled along the right flank and is confident she is stepping closer to the player she was prior to her ACL rupture.

“I felt good, especially in the second half. I was a little bit frustrated in the first half,” she continued.

“That’s sometimes how the game is, but you’ve got to have that mental focus on the next ball, the next chance.

“Personally, I feel like I’m growing with every single game in terms of feeling more myself and getting back to where I was.”

Friday evening’s match was the first-ever Women’s Super League Merseyside derby to be held at the Grand Old Lady, with a crowd of 22,161 supporters in attendance.

Sorensen and her peers were blown away by the support and hopes the team can continue to create special moments with the fans.

“It was amazing. That was exactly what we hoped for, to see so many fans here,” she added.

“Hopefully we gave them what they hoped for. We gave them everything and the only thing that was missing was that win.

“The support was amazing. We loved it.

“It’s a process. It takes time and we need to accept that as well.

“Good moments. Moments to build on. That’s what we need to take from this game.

“Another step in the right direction. Unfortunate not to take the win but that’s sometimes how football is.”
