Sean Dyche believes Everton's mentality on the road has improved since his arrival as manager - and he is calling for that positive mindset to continue in Saturday's visit to Chelsea.   

The Toffees travel south to take on Graham Potter’s side at Stamford Bridge (5.30pm GMT) and will look to go three Premier League games unbeaten for the first time since October.   

Away form has been indifferent for the Blues in this campaign, though, which has halted their capacity to build a run of momentum.   

Yet there have been clear improvements in Everton's recent performances on the road, particularly at Nottingham Forest two weeks ago, where Dyche's men were unlucky to come away with only a point against a side who have not lost a league game at the City Ground since September.

Dyche feels the upturn in displays away from Goodison has been down to a shift in mentality across the group.  

“We were a strong outfit against Nottingham Forest, and arguably should have seen the game through,” said Dyche, who has also led Everton to three victories from four matches at Goodison Park.

"Now it’s about consistency of mentality: on the training pitch, home games into away games. We have got to have a really high level of consistency. A base to work from and a mentality.   

"We need to go away from home and take it on. There are certain tactical things we might change for any given game. But, generally speaking, the mentality is a massive thing to take on an away performance. With the right kind of body language, intent and that desire to go and perform. To win a game.   

"I have been speaking to the players a lot about that. There are some tactical tweaks sometimes, certain grounds you might not have the ball as much. But you have to find ways of winning and we are trying to find a mentality to win games under different circumstances.  

"I thought Forest was as good of an away performance as you can get in the Premier League when you are in the situation we are.   

"I think that was a thoroughly good performance. There were some mistakes, we didn’t make the same mistakes against Brentford, and we won."    

This weekend's opponents Chelsea came into the month struggling for form. They responded to that, though, with a solid run of three successive victories across all competitions.   

While Dyche acknowledges Chelsea’s strengths and good current form, he has called on his Everton side to approach the game with another confident mentality that can help deliver a crucial positive result.   

“Chelsea have some very good players, strong players,” he admits. “It’s another tough away game, they all are in the Premier League. Home or away, we have got to be ready.   

“We have shown a mentality that we can be ready for that, and when the whistle blows, we have got to be ready to deliver.  

“That’s the key focus for me. I say it all the time, all the noise has to go away. I speak to the team about it. It’s about what we do and taking on what is right in front of us.   

“We have to take that mentality home and away, wherever we go. Over a season’s work, it pays you back, when you produce that mentality home and away.   

“Of course, it’s not easy going to these places [Stamford Bridge]. But that’s the mentality we have to have. We need to put on a performance that can win the game.”
