Dyche On Positive Away Steps For Everton

Sean Dyche drew on the positive steps his Everton side are making away from home despite ruing the small margins at both ends of the pitch that denied them victory in a 2-2 draw at Nottingham Forest.

The Blues edged ahead at the City Ground through Demarai Gray’s 10th-minute penalty and Abdoulaye Doucoure’s header before the interval, only to be twice pegged back by Brennan Johnson levellers.

Forest’s second came 13 minutes from time when goalscorer Doucoure’s pass was intercepted as Everton looked to counter.

Despite missing out on a crucial victory, Dyche insisted there were reasons for encouragement as his players showed plenty of attacking intent to secure a point at a ground where Forest have not lost in the league since September.

“A lot of positives,” said Dyche in his post-match interview. “The only real negative was not being calm enough on the ball in the second half and a counter-attack goal when we stripped the midfield but other than that, if we see that through, then everyone is saying it’s a very strong away performance. Physically we were very good.

“It was pleasing, from my point of view. We’ve spoken about changing the mentality away from home since I’ve been at the Club. We’ve played some good sides away from home – and Forest have a good home record, too – but it was nearly the perfect away performance. Just too many mistakes at both ends.

“We had chances to break open their play, and we did it, but we got into such key positions so we need to find that killer moment. That’s been the story of the season.

“Scoring two goals away, that’s another start point, but the mentality was really good today.

“The only thing is, we stripped the midfield for no need [for Forest’s second goal]. We want to counter, especially away from home in the Premier League. You want the energy to counter, and there was plenty of that today, but you can’t strip the midfield. I thought Doucs was excellent so I’m not questioning him since I’ve been at this football club but we just stripped the midfield and there was no reason for that.

“We countered with control at times today, kept our shape well, and it was a good away performance. There are other mistakes since I’ve been at the Club that we have to eradicate but the feel of the performances is getting better and stronger. That’s very pleasing.

“There’s factual evidence of us getting stronger. We’ve done enough to win the game today and have done the right things to win the game apart from the mistakes we’ve mentioned.”

DEPARTING MAIER & SEVECKE THANK BLUES

Defender duo Leonie Maier and Rikke Sevecke reflect on their final Everton match as the pair are set to depart the Club this summer.

Dyche also felt Everton should have been awarded a second penalty when captain Seamus Coleman went down in the penalty area after a challenge from Jack Colback.

He was, however, encouraged by the chances his team created, which he feels is further proof of the improvements being made since he took charge.

“I will say, how we don’t get a second penalty is beyond me,” added the Blues boss. “That’s a foul every day of the week.

“Dimi – who I thought played really well today – had a big moment in the first half and we had moments when we got into great positions. We’re asking more questions. It’s not just about goalscorers, it’s about putting people into goalscoring positions so I’m pleased that we did that again today.

“I think we have done that since I’ve been at the Club and the players deserve a lot of credit for that. That need to keep that mindset to keep getting in positions. We’ve got to keep going.”
