Finnigan: I Still Rewatch My Derby Strike

Megan Finnigan says the incredible feeling of scoring in a Merseyside derby is yet to wear off as she anticipates another memorable clash next month.

The Blues defender opened the scoring in front of a record crowd at Anfield as Everton triumphed 3-0 over Liverpool back in September.

The local rivals are set to go head to head once again on Sunday 26 March, and Everton’s longest-serving player admits she still reminisces about the win at Anfield to this day.

“It meant so much,” she told evertonfc.com.

“There was so much going into it.

“The last time we won at Anfield, I didn’t manage to get onto the pitch, so I had an extra incentive to smash it this time round.

“I had also missed the first game of the season through injury against West Ham, so it was kind of my season starter, and I started it quite well!

“My whole family was there; it was an amazing feeling.

“I’m not going to lie; I still watch the goal back every now and again. Not too much though!

“It was an amazing feeling, and we can’t wait for the reverse fixture at Goodison, so bring it on.”

With tickets now on sale for the derby clash, Finnigan urged Evertonians to join the Blues for what is set to be another historic encounter.

“It would be amazing to break our attendance record,” she added.

“The game at Anfield, I felt the occasion might have got to Liverpool a little bit more than it did us, so they’ll be coming to Goodison with a point to prove but it makes for an even juicer fixture.

“Hopefully we can get as many fans as possible there and make it a really good day for Evertonians.”

It’s been a season of significant development for Finnigan, who continues to impress manager Brian Sorensen and supporters alike.

The 24-year-old has helped to secure five clean sheets in the league so far this campaign and believes the Blues are on the right trajectory as a group.

“We’re in a good place as a team for where we want to be right now,” Finnigan said.

“We’re happy and on the right path.

“Personally, I feel like I’m having a good season in terms of consistency, playing in different formations and positions. I feel that I maintain a level of consistency in my performances which I’m happy with.

“Of course, there’s always improvements to be made but right now I feel I’m doing good.”
