WOMEN'S TEAM

Sevecke & Björn: We're Getting Better Every Game

A battling defensive performance saw Everton secure a valuable draw away to Women's Super League title challenges Manchester United on Sunday afternoon.

It was the first time Marc Skinner's side had failed to score in a league contest since April, while the goalless draw also handed the Blues a third WSL shut-out from their past four outings.

Key central defender Rikke Sevecke was a colossal presence at the back throughout the game at Leigh Sports Village. She’s now made 28 interceptions across the league campaign; no player has made more.

Despite the Danish international's strong individual display, she was keen to praise the collective effort of the whole team for keeping the talented home side at bay

“I and Nathalie [Björn] did a great job, along with our teammates,” she told evertontv.

“As a defender, it’s nice to be able to defend a lot and be there in the box, taking one for the team. It was good from a defensive standpoint. We held a clean sheet and that’s good.”

Defensive partner Björn has had to bide her time in recent weeks but also stood out in what was her first start since the 3-0 victory away to Tottenham back in December.

“We produced a really good team effort today,” said the Swedish defender.

“With the fans, the subs, everything. They ran and ran and it made it easier for me and Ri to defend in the box.

“It was a real team effort. It didn’t look beautiful, but that’s sometimes the way to go. One point is better than zero.”

Brian Sørensen’s side are now unbeaten in four league outings and sit up in fifth in the WSL table, but Sevecke believes there’s even more to come from the group.

“I really am [enjoying my football this season],’ explained Sevecke. “I feel like we are getting better and better as a team. Still learning a lot about each other, but it’s looking great out there.”

Björn added: "We are getting better each game, it’s going to be interesting to see how the season ends.”

Brian Sorensen's side are back in action in March for a month of exciting action which includes a Merseyside derby at Goodison Park!

The upcoming clash between the two rivals is scheduled to kick off at 12.30pm on Sunday 26 March (subject to change).
