Finnigan On ‘Dangerous’ Everton Form

Defender Megan Finnigan believes Everton’s run of form makes them a dangerous threat for upcoming opponents.

The Toffees won their third league game on the bounce on Sunday, beating West Ham United in a dominant 3-0 win.

Academy graduate Finnigan doubled the Blues' advantage after 12 minutes, her second goal of the season.

“I’m buzzing,” she told evertontv. “It was a game we knew we wanted to win because of how close they are to us in the table.

“To get three wins out of the past three league games is really important for our momentum.

“It was nice to score as well and I felt we had to really grind to keep that clean sheet which was also pleasing.

“Overall, I’m buzzing!”

The goals scored at the weekend all came from different areas of the pitch as 10 different players have found the back of the net in the league for the Blues so far this season.

HIGHLIGHTS: EVERTON WOMEN 3-0 WEST HAM WOMEN

Match highlights from Sunday's Barclays Women's Super League encounter against West Ham United.

The 24-year-old Finnigan feels goal threats across the team is perhaps something which has been lacked in the past, but certainly not in the present.

“In previous seasons, that’s probably something we have been lacking, that firepower,” she added.

“We weren’t creating enough or being clinical enough, but recently we look dangerous.

“I thought every time we attacked on Sunday [we could have scored]. It could have been more than 3-0 because we look so dangerous.

“Brian [Sorensen] made a point when we came back from the Christmas break that we have a good run of games now where we expect to win.

“Obviously, we try to win every game but now we can really begin to gather momentum and points on the teams around us.

“The group continues to evolve game by game. We’re really beginning to understand the manager’s principles and we’re beginning to have a clear identity to our play.

“It’s all positive for us at the minute.”

Defensive solidify is just as important as Finnigan helped to secure Everton’s fifth clean sheet of the Women’s Super League season.

SORENSEN HAILS EVERTON'S QUALITY FOLLOWING WEST HAM WIN

Manager reflects on 3-0 win in the Barclays Women's Super League.

After a brief spell on the sidelines, the Blues centre-half was happy to contribute at both ends of the park.

“It’s nice to get back on the pitch [and get games under my belt],” she said.

“I had some time off due to an injury.

“I thought everyone contributed to the win.

“Rambo (Emily Ramsey) made some unbelievable saves towards the end, especially that one that she tips onto the bar. We’ve got her to thank as well.

“For us, the main thing is to keep clean sheets and we go get the goals at the other end if we can.”

Up next for Everton is the beginning of the Women’s FA Cup campaign as they welcome Birmingham City to Walton Hall Park.

After missing out on a home tie last season, Finnigan says she’s excited to begin the cup pursuit on home soil.

“It’s the FA Cup this weekend which of course is a massive competition, one that we want to go far in.

“The aim is to win some silverware with this group of players.

“In the league we’re making progress, but we have to be realistic with how long it’ll take [to challenge the teams above us].

“In the cup, anything can happen.

“I think Birmingham will be a tough game.

“They’re doing well in the Championship so we can’t take anything for granted.

“We’ll see how far we can go, and anything can happen.

“It would be great to go back to Wembley but let’s hope this time we can win it!

“The sky’s our limit.”
