The Liverpool Echo reacts to the Under-21s' sensational comeback against Mansfield Town in the Papa John's Trophy last night.

Two late strikes from Liam Higgins and Tom Cannon secured a dramatic turnaround for the young Blues to set up a last 16 tie against Lincoln City.

Reporter Connor O'Neill analyses the Under-21s' performance and how young ace Tom Cannon continues to impress.

"It didn’t look like it was going to be Tom Cannon’s night," he wrote.

"Bandaged up, the forward cut a frustrated figure as his side chased the game in the closing stages at Goodison Park.

"But sometimes some things are just meant to be. Cannon has enjoyed one hell of a November that will live long in his memory.

"And as milestones go, this was another to add to the list. In the third minute of added time, he kept his composure when it mattered most.

"And not for the first time this season, that is exactly what Cannon did here. He sent the perfect message to [Frank] Lampard."

Another positive from Wednesday's win at Goodison Park was Ben Godfrey's first full 90 minutes of action as he continues his recovery from injury.

O'Neill adds: "Godfrey had already featured twice for Tait’s side in recent weeks, but on both occasions had come off at different points in the game. However, here he completed the full match and operated on the right of a back three.

"And midway through the second half, with the young Blues chasing the game, Godfrey produced a great tackle on the recovery as Mansfield looked to break away. It was the perfect reminder of what he can offer Lampard’s side.

"Whether the game at Goodison [against Wolverhampton Wanderers] will come too early for Godfrey remains to be seen, but Lampard will be delighted that his defender has managed to take another major step in his return to full fitness."
