Pickford's England Book Place In World Cup Knockout Phase

Jordan Pickford, Conor Coady and England are on their way to the last 16 of the World Cup after a resounding 3-0 victory over Wales.

A Marcus Rashford double sandwiched by a Phil Foden strike was enough to book the Three Lions a place in the knockout phases.

Everton goalkeeper Pickford once again started between the sticks for England on Tuesday, with Coady an unused substitute.

Gareth Southgate's side dominated against Wales and their perseverance eventually paid off in the 50th minute when Manchester United's Rashford scored a brilliant free-kick into the far corner to give England a deserved lead.

The scoreline was doubled only 98 seconds later. Rashford was again involved in the build-up, chasing down defender Ben Davies as the ball then slipped into the path of England captain Harry Kane.

The striker whipped a low ball into the path of Foden who struck home at the back post.

Despite the setback, Wales looked to respond as Pickford was called into action.

Kieffer Moore's shot from long range deflected off Harry Maguire, causing Pickford to react within a split-second, palming away the Welshman's effort.

A third goal for England soon followed and it was a historic strike.

Rashford got on the end of Kalvin Phillips ball over the top and delivered a sensational solo run to then net England's 100th goal in the history of World Cup finals.

Tuesday's victory sees England finish top of Group B and they will face Idrissa Gana Gueye's Senegal in the round of 16. However, Pickford will not come up against his Everton teammate, with Gana suspended for the clash after picking up his second yellow card of the competition in Senegal's 2-1 victory over Ecuador.

England and Senegal will meet for a place in the quarter-finals on Sunday (GMT 7pm) at the Al Bayt Stadium.
