Gana Steers Senegal To Last 16 Of World Cup

Idrissa Gana Gueye helped Senegal secure a last-16 spot at the World Cup after a 2-1 victory in their winner-takes-all clash against Ecuador in Al Rayyan.

The Everton midfielder started in midfield for the third match running at the tournament in Qatar and created the all-important winner 20 minutes from time, whipping in a free-kick that was deflected into the path of Kalidou Koulibaly for the Chelsea defender to fire home.

The result saw Senegal finish second in Group A - behind winners Netherlands - and means the defending Africa Cup of Nations champions could face Jordan Pickford's England in the last-16 stage.

But they will have to do it without Gana, who is suspended for the knockout match after collecting his second yellow card of the tournament against Ecuador.

Senegal went into their final group clash knowing only a victory would see them progress, with their South American opponents starting the day one point ahead of them on four points.

But the Lions of Teranga - inspired by an impressive performance from Gana - got a vital opener just before half-time after Watford's Sarr was brought down inside the area and picked himself up to slot home from the penalty spot.

Ecuador seized back the advantage when they levelled on 67 minutes through Brighton's Moises Caicedo but, moments later, Gana's free-kick proved decisive as he teed up Kouibaly for the winner.
