Sorensen Calls For Higher Standards Following Cup Win

Brian Sorensen was pleased with the way his side grew into Saturday’s 3-0 win over Sheffield United in the Continental League Cup.

The Blues dominated the contest from the start but struggled to convert their possession into meaningful efforts on goal, and it took until the 55th minute to break the deadlock when Katja Snoeijs fired the Blues ahead.

From there, the Toffees started to cut through their opponents with greater ease and then, as the game approached the final ten minutes, substitute Hanna Bennison excellently intercepted a pass deep inside the United half before stepping forward and smashing a shot into the top corner.

Everton made it three eight minutes later when fellow substitute Gio drove down the left flank before dribbling her way through United defenders and then cutting the ball back for Jess Park to finish.

Speaking to evertontv post-match, Sorensen said: "We started out in the first five minutes really good, and because we looked so good, my thoughts were ‘okay this is going to be a good game for us’.

"But then it was like we stopped. It was too passive, there was no thought in what we were doing. Unfortunately, we had to talk about it at half-time but I think the second half was better.

"There was bite in our press and that’s actually where our goal comes from, we started looking like more what we want to do."

He continued by stating: "It’s always tough to play against a team that just wants to defend, like get numbers behind the ball. But I think we should demand more from ourselves, and want to do better.

"I’m happy with the result and the win, but just the performance can be better."

Snoeijs’ crucial opening goal was her first since joining the club, however despite that, Sorensen admitted he’s not been concerned about her form in front of goal and instead had high praise for the forward, labelling her one of the best finishers he’s ever worked with.

"I’m not worried about Kat, I see her in training, she is an unbelievable finisher, probably one of the best I’ve seen in all the years I’ve been coaching.

"But we need to set off those situations [leading to the goal], and that takes hard work from the whole team because we know she can finish, but yeah, it’s nice that she got her first one today and I am sure more will come."

The Everton boss was also full of praise for Gio who played a key role in the Blues' third goal, dancing through tackles in the box before setting up Park to finish.

"We have been monitoring Gio for a while, we wanted to start her today, but unfortunately that hip that has caused her so much trouble was not there yet.

"She can't play against Arsenal of course, so hopefully after that she can be in consideration to start.

"But we need to monitor that hip otherwise it could be an issue that leads to an operation, and we don’t want to do that, we want to take care of a young player.

"We know she’s a good player, hopefully, she played 25 minutes today and she can now build on that."
