Lampard: No Doubt We'll Get Better

Read our in-depth interview with Frank Lampard after Everton’s 5-1 victory over Western Sydney Wanderers.

The Blues boss told evertontv why his side can take confidence from a positive attacking display, the importance of Anthony Gordon’s hat-trick, how impressed he’s been with young talents including Isaac Price, and his gratitude to Evertonians for their support.

Watch the video interview above or by clicking here.

Frank, another victory in Australia and a performance full of attacking intent, is that something to really round off this tour?

Yes, it’s been great for the tour. Good for the confidence of the team.

We’ve had two challenging games in different ways. There was the heat and the jetlag and good opposition, obviously.

Tonight was probably [going to be] a team that we expected would defend a bit deeper and we had to be better on the ball, control the game and we did that. We were clinical, which was nice.

You’ll be the first to acknowledge that tougher tests are going to come ahead in the Premier League, but the quality of the attacking tonight and the passages of play, is that something to take confidence from?

Yes, you can only deal with what’s in front of you.

When a team give you opportunities to play in their half then you have got to do it well, be sharp, move the ball well.

The level will go up when we go back to the Premier League, that’s the difficult bit. But you can only work and practice. Even the nature of Anthony’s last goal, he moves it quickly and gets his shot away. That’s what he, Demarai, Dwight and other players have to be doing.

They have to practice it and they have to apply it. They did it tonight and then they have to carry on doing that when we come back to England.

You mention about Anthony practicing that, he actually said in our interview how much work he has been doing on the field with Assistant Manager Joe Edwards after training as well. Is that the importance, to get that confidence but also to put the hard work in on the training ground?

Yes, sure. It’s the only way to get on in this game. To get on the training pitch, keep going and be consistent with it.

No matter when you’re scoring or when you’re not, that just happens.

Anthony does that, other players do that. It can never be something that he lets go. He has to keep doing that and when you do that then you’ll see the rewards.

It’s a good night tonight because he’s got his rewards.

A quick word for Dwight McNeil, he played a different position tonight. How impressed were you with his performance?

He was really good. I thought he was great; he really grew into it.

He made some great passes, showed great energy and I know he can do that more central style of role.

He can be an eight, he’s played there before when he was younger in his career.

It’s something for us to look at in an attacking manner. Dwight covers a lot of ground.

I think sometimes the way he moves; people don’t sense exactly how much ground he covers but he covers a lot.

He’s got a great quality and I’m just trying to work with him. He’s settling into the Club now and we have to give him a bit of time to find his feet.

It’s very normal for a young man like he is, he just turned 23 yesterday. It’s very normal that it takes a little bit of time and games like today he showed his quality.

HIGHLIGHTS: WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS 1-5 EVERTON

All the goals as Anthony Gordon hits a hat-trick.

A word on Isaac Price. You called him the best player on the pitch against Celtic. It looked like he had been playing for Everton for years with the way he’s played.

He’s been brilliant on the trip.

He deserved to play because he’s trained great. His energy is amazing. I think you can see that natural energy to his game.

Isaac wins a lot of second balls and he’s calm when he gets there, and his passing. When I put him higher on the pitch in the last 20 minutes, he’s finding lovely little passes in great pockets, which is a bit of a natural knack.

It’s been a real positive trip for Isaac and he puts himself now in the frame to be in the First-Team squad when the games start.

You know, we’ve got a couple of injuries so that’s what young players have to do. When they sniff a chance, they have to take it and he’s taken it this trip.

Does that extend to Tom Cannon and Stanley Mills? They both came off the bench and made an instant impact, and there was a first senior goal for Tom.

Yes, both of them. They’ve both done great. Stan’s been great for a long time and he’s training with application, consistency of performance and his attitude. The same with Tommy.

They’re a delight to coach because they’re low maintenance and they want to play for Everton.

They’ve both shown their qualities and again, they’ll be with the First-Team squad in the short-term future.

A word on the fans and how brilliant have they been during the whole time we’ve been Down Under?

They’ve been great. We’ve stayed very central in the city and we’ve seen them when we’ve been walking, running or whatever we do when we get out with the staff and the players from our hotel.

The tour has been really, really great. It shows the size of the Club, shows the support that we have over here from people who follow us and watch the Premier League.

We’re very thankful for what we’ve received over here.

FULL 90: WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS 1-5 EVERTON

All of the action from Blues' victory in final Super Sydney Cup clash.

It’s been two wins while on the trip. What do you feel will be the benefit from this week in Australia?

A bit of confidence. [It’s important to] go on and have a break. The lads deserve a bit of a break.

Forget the last week before the break when we had bad results and when I say forget it, I mean I understand the things we need to get better at but start fresh, go again because we’ll get a lot better, I’m sure of that.

But we need the work, we need the time and we also want to get results along the way.
