Veje: Everton Feels Like Family

Everton is a place that’s already beginning to feel like home for summer recruit Katrine Veje.

The Blues are three games into the 2022/23 Women’s Super League season and the Dane has started every one, securing two wins and conceding only one goal in the process.

An impressive return for the defender whose first victories in royal blue came in contrasting manners.

Veje was among several Everton players who outplayed and outclassed Liverpool in the 3-0 Merseyside derby triumph at Anfield on 25 September.

Four days later, however, the squad were back in action for their rescheduled opener at Walton Hall Park and had to show patience and resolve to break down Leicester City’s defensive resilience to find a winner in the dying embers of the game.

While Veje admitted the hosts had a stroke of luck with the winning goal, the 31-year-old Denmark international felt the character displayed from Brian Sorensen’s squad justified the result.

“I’m very happy,” said Veje. “It was a bit lucky, but we had the chances to score.

“The team kept pushing and believed in ourselves which earned a really important three points for us.

“In the first half against Leicester, we weren’t good enough.

“In the second half we pushed so hard to make up for it and, thankfully, found the goal in the end.”

Two wins in quick succession is only part of the story.

Months of preparation have led to the encouraging start to the campaign and the unity in the Everton squad has been one of the biggest developments in that time.

“I said at Anfield after the game, I feel this group is so positive with each other,” Veje continued.

“We stick together. We train well and push each other further with every session.

“That’s why we got three points against Leicester because we don’t give up. That is so important.

“I feel settled here. We had a really good preseason; I knew some of the players and Brian [Sorensen] before I arrived so that helped a lot to settle in as quickly as I have.

“Everyone has been so welcoming and honestly, they all feel like family to me now which is so important for us as a team this season.

“The fans are part of that, too. I heard them chanting my name throughout our first home game which was great!”

While it remains early in the season and tougher tests lie ahead, the defensive strength displayed by Sorensen’s side this season is an intimidating prospect for upcoming challengers.

However, Veje acknowledged the team cannot be complacent and must continue to raise standards if they wish to improve on last season’s league finish.

“We’ve conceded only one goal in three games, which is decent,” she said.

“We have a very good backline, we’re a compact team. It’s just about being clinical when those chances come further up the field and being resilient in our defending as well.

“It was good to win in the last minute against Leicester, but we don’t want to wait until those late stages to score. Hopefully we can find the back of the net earlier in our next games.”
