Pickford Wins PL's Save Of The Month

Jordan Pickford has won the Premier League's Castrol Save of the Month award for his acrobatic stop to keep out Darwin Núñez in the 241st Merseyside derby.

A panel of experts deemed England's number one the best from a shortlist of six eye-catching saves throughout September.

Pickford, who this week returned to full training after sustaining a thigh injury in that clash with Liverpool, believes the stop came at a crucial time for the Blues.

"It's good, I'm happy to win the award," he said. "I was happy to be playing a part in a big fixture for Everton.

"Making saves is what goalkeepers are there to do and to win an award is always nice. For me, personally, it's a nice one to have.

"The save itself was from a shot after a through ball from Liverpool and I was out of position. I've had to adjust quite a lot to make that save and to tip it on to the crossbar was good but I think my movement before that, from a goalkeeper's perspective, to readjust and get back into position was the key to being able to make the save.

"It was just before half-time, so it was a big moment in the game because you don't want to be going in at half-time 1-0 down."

When asked about his immediate feelings after making the save, Pickford added: "It's always good. It kept our momentum in the game at a crucial moment.

"I don't mind what game it comes in - I'm there to keep making saves regardless, but we know how much it means to the city, to Evertonians, so making one like that in a Merseyside derby is always going to be big."

Another of Pickford's saves against Liverpool - a late reaction stop to tip Mo Salah's effort on to the post - was also nominated for September's prize.

"I think they were both big saves at important times," the 28-year-old said. "The Núñez one, tipping it on to the crossbar, probably looks better - but the Salah one right at the death kept us in the game. It was the slightest of touches but it was enough to get it on to the post."

Last season, Pickford scooped the inaugural Castrol Save of the Season award for his stunning goalline stop from Chelsea's Cesar Azpilicueta on 1 May.
