Pickford On Everton's 'Unbelievable' Spirit

Jordan Pickford has praised the togetherness and “unbelievable” character of his Everton teammates following a thrilling encounter against Liverpool at Goodison Park on Saturday.

The hosts performed superbly against their local rivals but were forced to settle for a point as the game finished goalless.

Both Pickford and his counterpart Alisson Becker produced several outstanding saves over the contest.

Praised as “world class” by his manager following the derby, Pickford believes Everton are pulling in the right direction under Frank Lampard’s guidance.

“I thought we played a great game,” the England international said.

“You know Liverpool are going to keep pushing, they’re going to create chances because you know they’re a top side.

“You’ve got to suffer as a team. You suffer by working hard off the ball and I think we showed that today.

“The character and the team spirit was unbelievable.

“The last two games we’ve had a couple of VAR decisions which didn’t go our way. That’s VAR. It’s going to give you some decisions and sometimes it won’t.

“The team spirit is good and there are some good positives signs.”

Pickford again showcased why the Everton keeper is his nation's number one with several fingertip saves made to keep the visitors at bay.

Pickford, however, was eager to deflect praise to his teammates for a tireless collective effort.

“That’s what I’m there to do [make saves],” he continued.

“I work hard. I commit myself every day in training 100 per cent.

“To put a performance on like that, I’m pleased but it’s another building block for me.

“It’s my first clean sheet of the [Premier League] season, not just for me but for the whole lads.

“We’re all in it together. I’m there to be called upon but then you’ve got people putting blocks, challenges, everyone is putting their heart on the line.

“To get a clean sheet at home to build for the upcoming games before the international break is good for confidence.

“Alisson made some good point-blank saves and tipped one over the bar, too.

“That’s what goalkeepers are there to do. You’re there to help your teammates when called upon.

“That’s why we work so hard in the week in training in order to put in performances.”

Everton’s unbeaten run now extends to five matches across all competitions, with three points earned over the course of the last week.

While the Blues are yet to get a win on the board in the Premier League, the 28-year-old is confident the squad will get their just rewards in the coming games.

“I keep talking about the team spirit and the characters that we have in the team now," he said. "It’s unbelievable.

“We were unfortunate today again but we’re not far off at all.

“It’s a good building block to go and get the win in the next few games.”
