Lampard's Verdict On Brentford Draw

Frank Lampard said Everton’s 1-1 draw at Brentford was “a fair result and a good point”, as he outlined the key improvements his team can make.

Anthony Gordon’s superbly-taken 24th-minute goal put the Blues ahead at Gtech Community Stadium, with Everton getting their reward for a first-half display full of intensity and attacking purpose.

Brentford piled on the pressure in the second half and – despite a determined defensive display from Lampard’s side – levelled six minutes from time when Vitaly Janelt finished from close range.

Lampard – who revealed an injury to Mason Holgate “may take him out for the next couple of games” – explained why he is confident Everton can elevate their performances in their upcoming games.

The Blues take on Leeds United at Elland Road on Tuesday before a Merseyside derby showdown at Goodison Park four days later.

“I’m pleased to get a point [at Brentford],” Lampard said. “In the first half, I thought we played really good football.

“We had a lot of control in the first 30 minutes – we had very good possession, which is what we're striving for.

“For our goal, Anthony showed great composure, which is what I want from him, and I think it's the next step for him. He showed that brilliantly with an extra touch and his finish.

“Of course, there's a feeling of disappointment after conceding with six minutes to go but I'm sure Brentford will feel like they could have had more, having hit the woodwork two or three times.

“We defended the box great, but one small lapse in concentration and means we don’t get three points.

“We’re playing in a way at the moment where we haven’t got Dominic [Calvert-Lewin] available, Neal Maupay has just come in, and we haven’t got a striker at times. As soon as we can develop our game a little bit more and have that more physical presence up front, then that will help.”

HIGHLIGHTS: BRENTFORD 1-1 EVERTON

Watch the best of the action from our eventful draw at the Gtech Community Stadium.

On the injury Holgate sustained midway through the second half, Lampard explained: “Mason opened up his knee and felt some pain so we're going to scan it in the next day or so. The feeling is it'll be weeks, as a maximum, we hope.

“It may take him out of the next couple of games, for sure, but I don't want to jump the gun too much on that. Hopefully it's not a really bad injury but we'll scan it in two days' time.”

Amadou Onana made his first Premier League start in the Brentford clash and delivered an accomplished performance alongside the in-form Alex Iwobi in central midfield.

Lampard said: “I thought Amadou and Alex were fantastic and had real control of the game at different times.

“Anyone who has been at the stadium today will have seen what a player Amadou can be.

“That’s why we brought him here. It’s a level of player we want to bring to the club. If we want to progress, then recruiting at that level and bringing a player of his quality will be a massive thing.”

Lampard says he is also excited about what his latest acquisition will offer after Everton completed the transfer of Neal Maupay from Brighton & Hove Albion on Friday.

"Neal is a number nine who can hold the ball up and be dangerous in the box,” he said.

“He has a good spirit and he's a good player. We need options up front. As players come back from injury and Neal comes in, we will be better for it."
