Davies On Boss' Wisdom And Injury Comeback

Tom Davies says he is feeling stronger every day following an impressive showing in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest, as he revealed why his is savouring learning from a manager with “a lot of wisdom” in boss Frank Lampard.

Davies was a bright, energetic and inventive presence in Everton’s midfield engine room as made his first start of the season in the Forest clash.

The Academy graduate completed the opening 57 minutes of the contest, with Lampard picking him out as a player “integral” to the Blues’ vibrant and purposeful passages of play.

Davies missed almost the entirety of the second half of last season after undergoing hamstring surgery, and believes he is approaching optimum fitness levels again.

“I felt good in the game,” he told evertontv.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve been out playing at Goodison. I’m glad to get the minutes and I’m looking to build on it from there.

“Coming off the injury, it does take a bit of time just to get used to playing. I’m feeling good, feeling better every day, and I’m just looking to continue developing and getting stronger.”

On working with Lampard, Davies said: “The manager and all the staff have been great since they’ve come in.

“They have really given the place a lot of life.

“The manager was a midfielder himself, so he’s got a lot of knowledge about the position

“Playing in a two in the middle, it’s about offering to support your back four, connecting the team, and just trying to be the brain for the team, really. I’m looking to develop and learn

"The manager has got a lot of wisdom to share.”

Demarai Gray’s 88th-minute equaliser against Forest ensured Everton got the very least they deserved in a dramatic contest at Goodison.

Everton carved out numerous opportunities to score during the game – the Blues had 19 shots in total – and Davies is confident victories will come if the team can add a ruthless edge to their creativity and intensity.

“I thought we started the game very well,” he said. “We didn’t take our chances when we could have.

“It gave them a bit of life to come into the game. The only thing we were missing was the goals, but there was a good reaction from the lads to come back from going one down.

“It shows our character. We didn’t lie down and give in. In times gone by, we might have lost the game. It’s good we got a point but we’re obviously disappointed, because it should have been three.”

Next up for Everton is a Carabao Cup second-round clash at League One Fleetwood Town on Tuesday night.

Davies set out the importance of the approaching the game with the correct mindset – and outlined what it would mean to embark on a deep cup run.

“We have to be focused against Fleetwood, because it’s a cup tie and anything can happen,” he said.

“We’ll be going there to win and hopefully win in style.

"We believe in ourselves. We have a good structure and we want to build from what’s been a bit of a slow start in the league.

He added: “It would be massive [to go on a cup run]. The fans always deserve it. They showed us last season how dedicated they are and how much they got behind the team.

“It would be great for everyone involved with Everton.”
