Rúben Vinagre joined Everton on loan from Sporting Clube de Portugal in July 2022 following a campaign when he was a domestic league cup winner with his parent club.

A versatile left-sider, Vinagre played 18 games for Sporting – where he had two separate spells in the academy and rejoined permanently shortly before his season-long switch to Everton – in 2021/22 and was undefeated in 16 Portuguese league and cup appearances.

Vinagre, an Under-17 and Under-19 European Championship winner with his country, originally came to the Premier League with Wolverhampton Wanderers in summer 2017, the player initially transferring on a temporary deal after two years with AS Monaco in France.

He played 13 games across the competitions in his debut English campaign, as Wolves ran away with the Championship to end a six-year top-flight exile.

Wolves duly moved to sign Vinagre on a long-term arrangement and the defender made his Premier League debut as a substitute in a 2-2 draw with Everton on the opening day of 2018/19.

Primarily a full-back, Vinagre played 17 Premier League games – and four more in cup competitions – in a season when his team finished seventh to achieve Europa League qualification.

Vinagre scored on his European debut, a qualifying-round success against Irish team Crusaders, and was a mainstay of Wolves’ quarter-final run, playing both legs of a last-16 victory over Olympiacos and starting and finishing the single-goal defeat by Sevilla in the following round.

Vinagre additionally featured 16 times in the heavily-disrupted 2019/20 Premier League campaign.

He began the subsequent behind-closed-doors season with a couple of league starts but soon completed a loan move to Greece with Olympiacos.

The player born in April 1999 figured only four times in two months in Athens and in January 2021 agreed a loan with Portuguese team Famalicao, managed by former Everton assistant boss Joao Pedro Sousa.

Vinagre started 20 matches in a fruitful stay when Famalicao managed a top-half finish in their first top-division campaign for a quarter century.

He was promptly acquired by Sporting for the following season, returning to Lisbon after time in the club’s academy from 2009-2010 and 2012-2015 was sandwiched by three years in the youth section at fellow capital club Belenenses.

Vinagre was 16 when he joined Monaco in 2015 and his football during two years in the Principality was played exclusively in the club’s age-group teams.

He represented Portugal at every level beneath the senior team, winning the first of four Under-21 caps in October 2018.

His international debut came for the national Under-16 side in February 2015. The following year, Vinagre was a mainstay in his country’s Under-17 European Championship finals success, earned with a penalty shootout victory over Spain in the final.

Vinagre claimed further international honours when he played every minute of Portugal’s victorious 2018 Under-19 European Championship campaign.

A team also featuring goalkeeper Joao Virginia, who would transfer from Arsenal to Everton soon after the tournament, beat Italy 4-3 after extra-time in a thrilling final in Finland.

Vinagre’s 10 caps for Portugal’s Under-20 team include three appearances at the 2019 Under-20 World Cup in Poland where his side didn’t advance beyond the group stage after collecting four points from three matches.
