What The Papers Say - 6 June

There is reaction to the World Cup play-off final between Wales and Ukraine in Monday's media.

Blues left-back Vitalii Mykolenko once again impressed for his national team, but was left heartbroken as an unfortunate first-half own goal from Andriy Yarmolenko denied Ukraine a place in the World Cup finals in Qatar later this year.

Elsewhere, speculation remains rife ahead of the summer transfer market, which officially opens on Friday (10 June).

The Daily Mail runs quotes from Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn, who has declared he wants to leave the North London club.

The report claims Spurs rejected a £17million bid from Ajax for the Dutchman last week, but it is said that Everton also hold an interest in the 24-year-old.

In the Daily Express, meanwhile, it is claimed the Toffees are hopeful of wrapping up the signing of James Tarkowski, 29, on a free transfer after submitting formal contract offer.

Former striker and current Sky Sports pundit Kevin Campbell has also been discussing the potential of Tarkowski moving to Goodison Park.

"I like the look of Tarkowski," said Campbell. "I like someone who’s just going to be there, do their job. Nothing fancy, just be unassuming and do his job.

“Time’s run out, he’s out of contract at Burnley so he can go to Everton and Everton can sign a player on a free.

“Obviously his wages he’ll get an upgrade.

“But somebody like him I think will be golden because he’s hardly ever injured and he’s somebody you can rely on.

“He just does his job. He’s a proper defender.”
