Q&A: Gray On Momentum & Evertonians' Unrivalled Support

Ahead of Sunday’s visit of Brentford, Everton attacker Demarai Gray sat down and reflected on the Blues' recent run of form, the collectiveness within the camp as the squad prepares for the final three matches of the season and how he has been blown away by the passionate support of Evertonians…

Q. Demarai, how’s the collective mood and spirit around the team at the moment?

DG: Yes, it’s good. I think it was a bit disappointing not to get three points on Wednesday night, but it’s another point on the board. We have to keep going now and carry that momentum into the next one. It was never going to be easy at Watford. We can’t dwell on it too much and we’re already looking forward to the next one.

Q. If we were to talk two weeks ago, how different would you be from then compared to now?

DG: It’s hard to say but in the moment it is different. Ultimately, nothing has changed, nothing is secured yet. We still have a job to finish and that’s the focus for us now. We can’t get carried away and be complacent because it’s only a few wins. We can’t focus on what’s happening elsewhere either. All we can do is work hard and focus on our games.

Q. Two points above the relegation zone. Three games to play. What’s your assessment of the run-in?

DG: Regardless of the situation that we’re in, Sunday I feel is a game that we can win. It’s at home and with our fans we have the advantage. When we have their support our mentality and the way we approach the game changes. We have to stay calm; we have good quality in the group. As long as our mentality is right then personally, I feel that we’ll be fine.

Q. Unbeaten in three games now. Has the group hit form at the perfect point in the season?

DG: Yeah, for sure. We started the season well, there was a drop in the middle of the season but these last six weeks we have began to pick up form and earn some results. There’s been a change within the group, the manager has been good with us and it helps us massively. On the pitch, we’re doing what’s asked of us and the results have been coming.

Q. How do you feel Frank Lampard has settled into the Club since his appointment?

DG: Under the circumstances, I think he has done a great job. He’s getting his ways across to the team. There has been ups and downs but we’re on a bit of good form now so it’s about keeping the momentum, sticking to the basics and finish the task at hand.

Q. It’s been a rollercoaster season. How has it been for yourself emotionally and mentally?

DG: It’s been tough. I don’t think any of us expected to be in this position, but this is football. At the end of the day, our performances haven’t been good enough. We’ve accepted that. No one wants to be in this position; however, we’re digging deep and fighting. We’re behind each other and as hard as it is, I fully believe in the quality that we have in the group, everyone is onboard with the staff and the manager. Although it is difficult, I always say before every game that you have to go out and enjoy it because we’re in a privileged position.

Q. The supporters have been incredible over the last few weeks. That must give you a huge amount of energy to go out and perform?

DG: It’s been quite scary to be honest! I’m quite a chilled out and relaxed guy, especially before a game. When you hear the noise when you arrive at Goodison and even the send off they gave us leaving the training ground, it’s a great feeling. It plays a massive part on the boys and it’s new for a lot of us who haven’t experienced this kind of support before. We’re more than grateful and we owe them. I think Evertonians know as well the massive part that they play. It just shows how much a collective club Everton is. We’re all one and in this situation together. Any pressure or nerves I’ve had have been lifted off my shoulders. They have given me a lease of life when I’m out on the pitch.

Q. Brentford may come into the game with a degree of freedom, how do you tackle that?

DG: Regardless of the position Brentford find themselves in, we approach the game the same way. They are a team with quality players that can punish you. However, I believe that we are more than capable of winning this game. We have beaten them at home already this season, so we will be looking to repeat that, but we know it’s not going to be easy.

Q. This of course is your first season back in the Premier League since a stint in Germany. What’s it been like to return to England?

DG: It’s been positive but a rollercoaster at the same time. No player wants to be fighting at this end of the table, but I take a lot from this experience. It’s been a lot of character building and understanding different circumstances in the game. It’s been the most I’ve played in a season minutes wise and I had a really good feeling when I signed for the Club. It’s been good for my development and my focus now is to help the team as much as I can and finish the job.
