Lampard's Vow After Watford Draw

Frank Lampard admitted Everton lacked a clinical edge during Wednesday’s goalless draw at Watford but declared his team will be “ready to fight again” when the Blues return to Goodison Park to host Brentford this weekend.

Lampard also paid tribute to the relentless vocal backing provided by the Blues’ away following at Vicarage Road, describing the travelling Evertonians as “extraordinary”.

Everton were the more purposeful and progressive side throughout the game but were unable to make a decisive breakthrough.

The visitors regularly advanced into promising attacking positions and had 16 shots – 10 more than the home side – and won 13 corners.

The stalemate means Everton move two points clear of the relegation spots, with Leeds United remaining in 18th place after a 3-0 home defeat to Chelsea.

Lampard said. "It is a point gained – on paper that is what it is. We have taken well-deserved wins recently against tough opposition [Chelsea and Leicester City].

“No disrespect to Watford, but we maybe expected to come here and win again, but the Premier League doesn't work that way.

“I think we were a little bit tense. We created all the chances, but we didn’t create cutting-edge chances like we would have wanted to.

“We got into the final third a lot and I expected a bit more from the boys in that area, but it wasn’t quite there.

“There is still work to be done. It's important the players rest on Thursday before two games on the bounce at Goodison [against Brentford on Sunday and Crystal Palace on 19 May].

“You get given nothing in football. We found that out tonight. Our form at Goodison has been good but we have to approach those two games the right way.”

Richarlison came closest to scoring breaking the deadlock at Watford, with the Brazilian’s deflected second-half effort forcing an athletic fingertip stop from home goalkeeper Ben Foster.

Demarai Gray then saw a shot go just wide following a neat interchange with Alex Iwobi.

Lampard believes the significant energy levels expended in Sunday’s 2-1 win at Leicester may have played a part in his team’s lack of ruthlessness in attack.

He said: “We played three days go and the players put a lot into it. There was maybe a little bit of tiredness, and we maybe lacked a little bit of sharpness.

“That’s normal, that can happen at this late stage of the season, when the players are giving everything every game.

“Watford had a lot of fresh players and were happy to be organised.

“If you’re not quite at your best – you’re maybe a bit tense and still feeling a bit in the legs from Sunday – then you have to make sure you don’t lose and you take a point.

“That’s not something we’ve done enough this season. We take the point and clean sheet and move on.”

Lampard also stressed the importance of the continued togetherness between the team and Evertonians as the Blues aim to secure the points to secure the Club’s Premier League status.

He added: “The fans are extraordinary. They are pushing along with the players. They will stick with us.

“We have two games at Goodison and we have to be together and we have to fight.

“I knew I was in a fight from the moment I came here.

“I think we can be pretty happy with how we’re performing at the minute but there is work to be done.”
