Lampard's Passionate Everton Pledge

Frank Lampard is vowing to “give everything for Everton” in a bid to preserve the Club’s treasured top-flight status.

Manager Lampard clashes with former team Chelsea at Goodison Park on Sunday.

Emotions over a reunion with the club where he enjoyed extraordinary success during 13 years as a player “don’t feel important”, insisted Lampard, whose “complete focus” is on conjuring a performance to defeat Thomas Tuchel’s side.

Overcoming Chelsea is a tall order – the Londoners had won eight straight away games in all competitions prior to Thursday’s draw at Manchester United – but Everton have latterly shown a capacity to run the Premier League’s leading teams close.

In addition to sound home form – they have won five and drawn one of eight Goodison fixtures since Lampard’s January appointment – Everton are sourcing optimism from a competitive display last week at Liverpool, where Anthony Gordon excelled and was twice turned down following strong penalty appeals.

“I have loved every minute of being at this club,” said Lampard, whose players are set for a rousing reception on Sunday, with fans planning to line Goodison Road to welcome the home team's coach.

“Sometimes people from the outside ask me, because of the position we are in, ‘Are you enjoying it? How tough is it?’

“I absolutely love it.

“I have been supported and welcomed incredibly well by the fans and will do everything to get this club back where I want it to be.

“In terms of my dedication to this job, I will absolutely give it everything for as long as Everton want me and I can get them where I think we can go.

“Our fans are brilliant, they are passionate, it [Everton] is their life.

“It is important the players understand that, I certainly do.

“If we get together in this moment, it makes us stronger. The fans are always behind us, we have to stimulate them in the way we play and with our intentions on the pitch.

“I was pleased with how the players defended each other in a tough environment at Liverpool last week

“We need to show that in every game.

“I appreciate the fans doing that [coach greeting] and we have to show it [desire] on our side.”

Lampard joined Chelsea from West Ham United in 2001 and won three Premier League titles and one Champions League and one Europa League at Stamford Bridge.

There were four FA Cups and two League Cup winners’ medals, too.

Lampard, then, is familiar with the pressure of high-stakes contests at the back end of campaigns.

And it is that element of his playing career he is currently drawing on, rather than getting caught up in a former affiliation with a club he also managed for 18 months until January last year.

Lampard did draw one parallel between his time as Chelsea boss and his position today. Gordon, the Everton Academy graduate, insists Lampard, shares multiple attributes with Chelsea’s 23-year-old England midfielder Mason Mount.

“Anthony has one of the greatest young attitudes I’ve seen in the game – he is very similar in attitude and application and talent level to Mason Mount,” said Lampard, who also had Mount on loan during his season in charge of Derby County in 2018/19.

“Anthony is a dedicated and determined boy and wants to play well for this club.

“He cares and loves playing for Everton.

“I have been very used to handling pressure. As a player, I would have been upset to have a season with no pressure – it means you’re not fighting for something.

“Our task is very clear, we have six games and have to get as many points as we can.

“It is in our hands and we have to handle that pressure.

“Chelsea will always be a big part of my life, I was there 13 years as a player and 18 months as manager, but it [Chelsea association] doesn’t feel an important part of this weekend.

“My only thought is Everton and preparing the team to try to win the game.”
