Allan Explains Everton Intent

Midfielder Allan says Everton sketched a template for their Premier League run-in with the combative, unflagging performance that overpowered Manchester United on Saturday.

Manager Frank Lampard’s team can secure back-to-back victories when Leicester City visit Goodison Park next week.

The success against United created precious breathing space between Everton and 18th-placed Burnley, who defeated Lampard’s side in a topsy-turvy game last week.

Allan had that game at Turf Moor in mind when he addressed the imperative of consigning “up-and-down” form lines to the past.

And, according to the 31-year-old, outstanding against United after missing the Burnley fixture to complete a three-match ban, recreating the ‘all-for-one’ attitude displayed at Goodison last weekend is fundamental to achieving greater consistency.

Everton have won three of five home Premier League games – it's five victories in seven Goodison matches across the competitions – since Lampard’s January appointment, but the loss at Burnley kept the boss waiting for his first away points.

“In the locker room, we ask ourselves what doesn't work when playing away from Goodison, because at home we have had good games,” began Allan.

“I believe our mindset against Manchester United was to go to battle, to fight for each other.

“The group, both the guys who played and those on the bench, was incredible.

“I didn't play at Burnley but was close to my teammates, I felt how painful it was to lose that important game and saw my teammates sad and with their heads down.

“But we didn't have another choice other than to continue working and Saturday was undoubtedly a really important win for us.

“Winning against a difficult opponent like Manchester United gives us a boost in confidence. We were really happy about it but, equally, we can't be satisfied with ups and downs.

“We have to keep working hard, keep the performance levels high and get more wins to stay in the Premier League.”

Allan was a big miss for Everton in a trio of away games after a red card, broadly viewed as extraordinarily harsh, in the Goodison victory over Newcastle United last month.

The Brazilian returned to compelling effect for the high-stakes contest with United. He made four tackles, the highest number of any Everton player, and only Fabian Delph (80 per cent) among the home contingent boasted greater passing accuracy than Allan’s 79-per-cent figure.

Captain Seamus Coleman talked unprompted about Allan’s influence on the match – and echoed his competitive teammate’s wish to ensure the Manchester United performance is the beginning of something substantial, not an isolated event.

The signs of encouragement are steadily forming under Lampard. Everton have won successive home games without conceding for the first time in more than two years – they last managed the feat around the turn of the year in 2019/20.

And the industry Lampard insists is non-negotiable was reflected in statistics from six days ago, which showed Everton’s players combined for 142 sprints to the visitors’ 98.

All well and good, admits Allan, but the former Napoli player insists the acid test is looming in the shape of Everton's bid for a third straight home win against Leicester.

“We approach one game at a time, and now there's Leicester, who are a difficult opponent,” said Allan, who could make his 49th Premier League appearance in the game.

“We know our qualities and playing at home we can have great results. There's no other choice, we have to continue fighting for more wins.

“I can only speak for myself, but I really like the manager’s work and I'm impressed by the way he's preparing us for the games and wants to make us play.

“The team lost the past few games, but that was our [players] fault.

“He's been preparing us for the games and we had some individual mistakes, but we are together with the manager and know this is the only way we can get through these tough times.”
