Everton Stars Qualify For World Cup

It was another packed international break for the stars of Everton Women as several nations secured their spots for major tournaments this summer and beyond.

Here’s our full breakdown on how the Blues fared away from domestic football.

England (Senior squad, Under-23s & Under-19s)

Gabby George was a late addition to the Sarina Wiegman’s England squad in preparation for matches against North Macedonia and Northern Ireland, in which the Lionesses won 10-0 and 5-0 away from home.

It was the first call-up for since 2019 for George, who was named on the bench for both encounters.

Sandy MacIver and Megan Finnigan, meanwhile, featured in back-to-back games for England Under-23s against the Netherlands, as the young Lionesses secured a 0-0 draw and 3-0 victory over their Dutch counterparts.

Finally, Grace Clinton and the Under-19s secured their place at the UEFA Women’s Under-19s Championship in the Czech Republic later this year.

Three wins on home soil for Gemma Davies’ side means they will compete in the finals of the competition, which will take place between 27 June and 9 July.

Sweden

Hanna Bennison and Nathalie Björn represented Sweden as they secured their spot at next year’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Björn came off the bench in a thumping 15-0 win away in Georgia, then midfielder Bennison started in a 1-1 draw with Courtney Brosnan’s Republic of Ireland.

Sweden can complete an unbeaten qualifying campaign when they face Finland in September in their final match of group A.

France

Eight wins out of eight for Kenza Dali’s France secured qualification for the FIFA World Cup in 2023.

The Everton number seven came off the bench during a 2-1 win away to Wales and started in a 1-0 win over Slovenia.

France will aim to maintain their 100 per cent qualifying campaign in anticipation for next year’s finals when they face Estonia and Greece later this year.

Italy

Aurora Galli and Italy secured vital wins over the break to send them back top of their qualifying group with two games left to play.

‘Yaya’ was an unused substitute in a 7-0 win over Lithuania, before completing 90 minutes in a 1-0 win over group rivals Switzerland.

Republic of Ireland

It was a special night in Gothenburg for Courtney Brosnan, who produced an outstanding performance against Sweden in a 1-1 draw.

Up against Club teammates Bennison and Björn, the Blues custodian was undoubtedly the Player of the Match as she helped secure a historic result against the number two ranked side in the world.

Scotland (Senior Squad & Under-19s)

It was a disappointing return to international action for Claire Emslie and Lucy Graham, as Scotland fell to a 2-0 defeat to Spain at Hampden Park.

There were elements to be proud of against the number seven side in the world rankings as Emslie completed the full match, with Graham joining in the final 10 minutes in front of a record crowd for a competitive match for the Scots.

Meanwhile for the Under-19s, Kenzie Weir enjoyed three wins on the bounce as the young defender helped to secure triumphs over Kazakhstan, Estonia and Kosovo.

Weir started all three matches and picked up a clean sheet in the opening 3-0 victory over Kazakhstan.

Northern Ireland

Simone Magill started two games but could not prevent Northern Ireland from slipping to back-to-back defeats to Austria and England, denting the nation's hopes of reaching next year’s World Cup finals.
