Everton Duo Impress In International Action

Everton pair Anthony Gordon and Nathan Patterson featured for England Under-21s and Scotland respectively on a busy night of international football on Tuesday.

Gordon impressed again for England Under-21s as the young Lions eased to a 3-0 U21 European Championship qualifying success in Albania, while Patterson played the first 57 minutes as Scotland battled out an entertaining 2-2 friendly draw with Austria in Vienna.

Scotland were 2-0 ahead when Patterson was substituted, with strikes either side of half-time from Grant Hanley and John McGinn putting Steve Clarke’s team in the ascendency

Michael Gregoritsch and Alessandro Schopf were on target in the final quarter-of-an-hour, however, to earn the home side a draw.

Gordon was one of England’s brightest sparks in their qualifying encounter, twice forcing Albania keeper Simon Simoni into excellent saves in the first half with well-struck efforts.

Lee Carsley’s side eventually made the breakthrough just after half-time through Folarin Balogun. Curtis Jones soon doubled England’s advantage before Balogun completed his brace to wrap up the victory.

Gordon again went close to scoring his fourth goal in four England Under-21 appearances late in the game but saw a shot well saved after a jinking run into the box.

Abdoulaye Doucoure was introduced as a 73rd-minute substitute for Mali but a 0-0 draw in Tunisia means his side will not feature at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Mali, bidding to qualify for the tournament for the first time, were unable to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit in the play-off clash.

Jordan Pickford and Seamus Coleman, meanwhile, were unused substitutes as England and the Republic of Ireland secured home friendly wins over Ivory Coast and Macedonia.

Everton duo Ryan Astley and Rhys Hughes featured in Wales Under-21s’ 1-1 U21 European Championship qualifying draw with Bulgaria.

Astley completed the full 90 minutes of the match in Newport, with Hughes introduced as a 67th minute substitute.
