What The Papers Say - 18 March

It was a special night under the lights at Goodison Park as Everton secured all three points against Newcastle United on Thursday evening.

It was "one for the ages", writes Daily Mail's David Maddock: "A night of insane drama that Everton's theatre impresario chairman Bill Kenwright would be proud of.

"Miraculously, magnificently, Alex Iwobi came up with a finale which brought the house down…almost literally, such was the noise it inspired amongst the Goodison faithful.

"With his side reduced to 10 men - after another desperately controversial VAR call - and clinging desperately on to a precious point against a physically imposing Newcastle, he scored a quite wondrous goal in the 99th minute that provoked scenes of utter carnage.

"Hard men were crying in the stands. The noise wasn’t just deafening, it was sonic boom territory."

Dominic King, from the same publication, added: "By the end, the stadium was shaking. They were banging on wooden panels, they were singing louder than they had done in years and the celebrations were a throwback to glorious days of old.

"This goal was huge. It may well have changed the course of a season that was heading for absolute calamity. It may well be the moment that keeps Everton in the Premier League. Certainly the noise at the end, the whistle and the screaming and the frenzy, suggested that will be the case."

The Liverpool Echo also described the electric atmosphere and the performance of goalscorer Alex Iwobi.

"Goodison hasn't seen scenes like that for a long, long time. Far too long," Adam Jones wrote.

"And the truth of the matter is that the Nigeria international fully deserved all of the praise that was about to come his way.

"A few remaining fans in the Main Stand near the press box, as the stadium was nearly empty, were still singing "Oh Alex Iwobi" to the tune of Seven Nation Army as they headed back home.

"Could you have pictured that a few months ago? A few weeks ago? Well, truth be told, even a few hours before kick off?

"But it would be wrong to boil his display down to just a goal.

"He showed great energy throughout the match, never giving up on any cause - however lost - making sure those inside the stadium knew he was there for the fight."
