Kenny On Lampard's 'Big Impact'

Jonjoe Kenny believes Frank Lampard’s management style is helping him produce some of the best football of his Everton career.

The full-back also revealed why he is savouring the chance to work alongside coach Ashley Cole and his ambition to regularly contribute assists and goals for the Blues.

Kenny has started five of Everton’s seven matches since Lampard’s appointment and impressed with a series of accomplished performances.

He provided a key attacking outlet for the Toffees in Thursday night’s 2-0 FA Cup victory over Boreham Wood and set up Everton’s opening goal with a driven low cross which was converted by Salomon Rondon.

As well as highlighting Kenny’s commitment and application, Lampard has been eager to praise his quality, describing the Academy graduate as “a great lad and a very good player”.

Kenny explained how the manager’s confidence in his ability has been central to his upturn in form.

“Having that belief from your manager can make a big impact,” he said.

“The manager has been different class and shown that belief in me. Especially with how I like to play football… I don’t think people did see the best of what I can do. Lately, bit by bit, I’m showing more and more.

“People might see things like the Cruyff turn [against Leeds United] – these are things I could do for a long, long time, it’s just that I probably didn’t have the confidence at the time. Now, the belief has been put into me and I’ve got that backing.

“Everyone knows I’m an aggressive player. I like to be tight and to defend and all that comes with that – but going forward I have the quality that I can create chances.

“I want to try to score goals from my position and create more chances – and I know that will come because we are practising that.”

Kenny added he is greatly benefiting from working closely with one of the finest left-backs of his generation in coach Cole. Kenny has regularly featured in that position in recent weeks and had transitioned admirably from his usual right-back spot.

“I spend a lot of time with Ashley," Kenny said. "Defensively, going from right-back to left-back, it was about changing my body shape and how I defend – he’s been different class and I’m taking little bits from him.

“For me, he was the best in the world when he was playing.

“I’ve got the best to learn from and I’m in the best position possible for me."

Kenny says Lampard has struck a perfect balance between bringing positivity and encouragement to the group, while also delivering forthright messages when necessary.

He added the manager and his coaching staff have cultivated a strong sense of togetherness at Everton – and is confident the Blues are well placed to start performing to their potential and climb the Premier League table.

Next up for Everton is a Premier League clash at Tottenham Hotspur on Monday, before successive Goodison Park meetings with Wolverhampton Wanderers and Newcastle United.

“When a new manager comes in, it’s always going to be a fresh start for everyone,” Kenny said.

“His experience is massive, as well as the aura that he has brought into the team.

“He has his different sides which every manager does and I think he brings them out at the right time. When we need a little kick up the bum or an arm around our shoulder, he has got it just right.

“Everyone knows what a career he had as a player but now, looking at him as a manager, he’s been brilliant.

“He uses all his coaching staff fantastically well and everyone feels as though they are in a team going in one direction.

“That’s the feeling we’ve all got as players – that we’re all aiming to keep improving and showing how good we actually are.”

On a personal level, Kenny says a renewed “laser focus” has been a further important element in breaking into the Everton First-Team picture after what he admitted was a difficult period on loan at Celtic last season.

And the 24-year-old is convinced this mindset will help him continue on an upward trajectory.

“I came back here to play,” he added. “I want to play for Everton. That was the goal.

“I knew what I wanted to do and I knew where I wanted to go…and having that focus [was key to improving].

“That’s still where I’m at and I think I’m got plenty more to offer.”
