Lampard's 'More Complete Everton' Aim

Frank Lampard is targeting a “more complete” Everton, as the Club enters a “crucial” phase of their campaign.

Manager Lampard’s side go to Tottenham Hotspur on Monday aiming for a first away win in 11 Premier League matches, after defeating National League Boreham Wood on Thursday to secure an Emirates FA Cup quarter-final tie with Crystal Palace.

Lampard, whose three victories since his appointment five weeks ago have all come at Goodison Park, has overseen a marked increase in the intensity of Everton’s football.

The emphasis now is on marrying the greater purpose and energy with the composure and assertiveness to control the rhythm of games.

“It is important to maintain focus and consistency in our work and approach to everything,” said Lampard.

“Our season doesn’t rest on Tottenham on Monday. But we have to work hard to prepare to try to get results in this patch of the season, which will be crucial for us.

“Every game is different, yesterday [against Boreham Wood] needed an injection of tempo because of the opposition's low defensive block.

“In other games, you need patience.

“But you must always have hard work and togetherness, which we have. There has been a real uplift in our pressing and off-the-ball work.

“Now, we have to be more complete in our in-possession play and structure, to allow us to be more confident on the ball.

“We are trying to play in a different and more progressive way and can’t expect that to be a success in every minute of every game.

“Things that were important to me and the staff have hit home with the players, they are listening to the message and understanding and working with us and trying to improve.

“We are moving in the right direction, that’s the sense from our performances, and the points we gain need to reflect that.”

Lampard is preparing for the “best version” of Spurs, who he considers “a very good team, full of top-end players and brilliantly managed by one of the best coaches out there”.

That coach, the fiery Italian Antonio Conte, has at his disposal one of the finest centre-forwards on the planet in Harry Kane.

“He is in great form, I have so much time for him as player… he is humble, the England captain and has many strengths,” continued Lampard. “His link-up play and assists and relationship with [fellow forward] Son and goalscoring threat.

“We are playing against a world-class number nine.”

The good news for Everton is they can field England’s best goalkeeper in direct opposition to his international teammate.

Jordan Pickford is poised to mark his 28th birthday on the day of the game with his 200th Premier League appearance.

“I have loved working with Jordan and anyone who holds that England number one shirt as long as he has holds a huge burden,” said Lampard.

“It is a pressurised position, on a national level, and he carries that brilliantly.

“A goalkeeper is analysed individually and to the highest degree as an England player.

“Working with him is a pleasure, he is low maintenance, works hard and makes saves and wants to win for the team.”

Vitalii Mykolenko is expected to be fit for the visit to north London despite a dead leg sustained when captaining Everton against Boreham Wood.

Lampard is staying “as close to Vitalii as I can, so he feels my support”, amid the Russian invasion of the player’s Ukrainian homeland, and has detected similar backing from Mykolenko’s colleagues.

“The way they have rallied around Vitalii has been great,” added Lampard, “I have been really impressed with the attitude and humility and work ethic of the squad.

“A situation like this brings different qualities and it is great to see humans interacting and supporting someone who is having a tough time.”

In a solely sporting context, Mykolenko’s inclusion in the party for Spurs would qualify as an additional boost, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin also in contention to feature.

Ben Godfrey is closing on a comeback, even if next week comes too soon, and Demarai Gray will be back in the equation before long.

“We have been improving but it gives us perspective knowing big players who can give us that extra nudge in the right direction will be coming back."
