Everton secured their place in the last eight of the Emirates FA Cup on Thursday evening as Salomón Rondón netted twice past Boreham Wood at Goodison Park.

The Guardian reacted to the result, claiming the Blues must improve if they are to progress to Wembley, however, credited the non-league side for how well they defended in the fifth-round tie.

Reporter Andy Hunter wrote: "They [Everton] will need to improve significantly on this display to reach the semi-finals at Wembley but the night belonged to Luke Garrard and his accomplished side.

"The Hertfordshire club defended expertly throughout and underlined why they are firmly in pursuit of promotion to the Football League this season."

One of the standout performers from the Boreham Wood win was the Blues Venezuelan forward.

Quotes from Frank Lampard were publshed by Liverpool World, as the boss credited Rondón as an "ideal squad member" in his post-match press conference.

“Every day he has trained, he has trained really well," said Lampard. "To train as a striker when you’re not starting, it’s not easy.

“You have to keep sharp and he’s done that every day in training. In that sense, he’s been an ideal squad member with his attitude.

“When he comes in, and he comes in today, he contributes and he gives us something different.

“He’s a different style of striker for us. A good, physical presence in the box and we need that. We need that for the squad ongoing.”

Another top performer under the lights at Goodison Park was Anthony Gordon.

Speaking to BBC Sport, former Everton player Pat Nevin described the Anthony Gordon as "a class above" the rest during his performance on Thursday.
