Lampard: Unity Can Drive Us Forwards

Frank Lampard says it is imperative Everton use the “feeling in the Club” and prevailing sense of togetherness with supporters to generate momentum over a vital period.

Everton beat Boreham Wood on Thursday courtesy of two second-half goals from Salomon Rondon, an “ideal squad member”, in the view of Lampard, to advance to an FA Cup quarter-final tie with Crystal Palace.

Lampard takes his team to Tottenham Hotspur on Monday, aiming for Everton's first Premier League away win in 11 matches.

Thoughts of the Cup visit to Palace, then, take a backseat for the time being.

But Lampard, who has overseen victories in three of his six matches and created a definite Goodison Park feelgood factor, is refusing to prioritise one competition over the other.

And taking the meeting with National League Boreham Wood in isolation, he attributed his side’s victory to an increase in urgency after Richarlison was introduced for a second half when Everton reverted to a back four.

"Every player wants to play big games and Crystal Palace will be a huge game with what is at stake for both teams,” said Lampard.

“We have to keep working, when I came here, I knew there was work to be done on a lot of levels.

We have to keep going and use the feeling in the Club, the togetherness with the fans, to move forwards.

“You can’t fix everything in a day, but in terms of performance I am seeing things that are improving and we will work every day to add results to that.

"There's an excitement about getting to the next round… it is a magical competition, the Club has a lot of history in it, so I'm excited to be involved, as are the players.

“In the league.. we have to keep going and use the feeling in the Club, the togetherness with the fans, to move forwards.”

Lampard named Vitalii Mykolenko captain for the Cup tie on a night when Everton again staged a show of unity with Ukraine.

Mykolenko, a January acquisition from Dynamo Kyiv, was forced off on the hour with a dead leg – Lampard is confident the 22-year-old will be available for the Spurs clash – but in his time on the field was purposeful on the left flank and supplied a number of dangerous crosses.

Indeed, he was inches from connecting with Rondon minutes before the striker scored the first of his two goals.

"I am pleased for Salomon, since I came here, he has not been a starter, but when you call on him he has qualities,” said Lampard.

“He has trained well every day and to train well as a striker, when you’re not playing, is not easy.

“You have to keep sharp and he’s done it every day. He has been an ideal squad member with his attitude.

“When he comes in, he contributes and gives us something different, a good physical presence in the box, which we need.

“You need goalscorers in your team, with the position we are in the league.

"I think in terms of the tribute [in recognition of what is happening in Ukraine, ahead of kick-off], as a club, we try to do things properly and I feel we did that in both home games [following similar show of unity prior to playing Manchester City on Saturday].”

Lampard disclosed Dominic Calvert-Lewin is poised to rejoin training this weekend following a groin problem.

Defender Ben Godfrey, added Lampard, is “getting closer and will be with us in the early part of next week” after a hamstring problem.

And Andre Gomes, who has been sidelined with a thigh issue, is scheduled for a training return in the coming days.

Lampard, meanwhile, confessed watching his side gradually wear down Boreham Wood was an instructive experience.

“The game was comfortable in the end, we were slow in the first half, which was interesting for me,” added Lampard.

“This type of game needs an injection of the pace and tempo we normally play at and we fell below it.

“But we addressed it at half-time and were sharp in the second half.

“I am not long here and have to understand the players need to hear a message, not to just shout at them about how slowly they are playing.

“I tried to send a clear message at half-time and made a change to get another player behind the midfield line and cause them problems and the players reacted really well to that.

“In a game where you get a comfortable result, sometimes it is good to flush those things out, and I saw some things, so I have no problem with how the game went.”
