Assistant Manager Edwards On Everton's New Philosophy

Assistant Manager Joe Edwards has outlined some of the new processes being implemented at Everton in a bid to improve short and long-term performances.

Edwards, who joined the Club following the arrival of new manager Frank Lampard last month, began his full-time coaching career at the age of 19 and enjoyed success in a number of roles at Chelsea, including Under-18s manager, Development Squad manager and, most recently, First Team assistant coach under Lampard and current boss Thomas Tuchel.

Edwards, now 35, sat down with evertontv for an in-depth interview, his first since swapping Stamford Bridge for Goodison Park.

Discussing the immediate work undertaken to embed a winning culture at the Club, Edwards said: “It starts from the work you do day-to-day. We’re not expecting to walk into a club and start winning silverware instantly, but at the same time, the standards you set for all the staff in the building and the players on a daily basis – we want them to think like winners every day and to push themselves.

“That’s the only way you’ve got any chance to getting anywhere near those levels over a long period. We just hope that very quickly those improvements will lead to progress.”

NEW ASSISTANT MANAGER JOE EDWARDS' FIRST INTERVIEW

Exclusive chat with evertontv covers first impressions, football philosophy and lots more.

A former schoolboy with Chelsea, Edwards spent 27 years in total with the west London club before choosing to be reunited with Lampard on Merseyside.

Despite being in his new role for only a few weeks, Edwards says he has already picked up plenty about Everton’s rich history - and believes the principles Evertonians demand align perfectly with what the new coaching staff intend to bring to Goodison.

“Coming to the training ground, there are a lot of Scousers in the building!” said Edwards. “I’ve actually got a lot of Scousers connected to my family, so I know they are the type of people who make you feel very welcome very quickly – and I experiences that very quickly here.

“I could feel that family connection at the training ground.

“There is a core of British players and local lads here, too, so for the identity of the team here at Everton, I do think that is important.

“And then the stadium… I knew from coming here as an away team to Goodison, when the team are on it and the fans are on it, it’s not a nice place to come - so, I’m absolutely loving being in the home dugout!

“It feels like a good match. When we haven’t got the ball, we want the team to press high up the pitch with aggression.

“We want the team to win the ball in the opposition half and be as far away from our goal as possible and as close to theirs as we can to just try to create as many chances as possible.

“There are not better places in the Premier League than Goodison when the fans then get behind you and it gives you even more energy and numbers when you hunt the ball – and we have to keep trying to use that.

“That’s down to the players to keep the work-rate high and buying into the ideas of how we press together.

“And when we have the ball, we want to find that balance.

“From analysing games earlier in the season, we thought it would a positive thing to have more possession and control games by having the ball more.

“That’s a big feature of how we want to play, but we don’t want to play short passes around our own box for the sake of it.

“We fully understand we want to be an exciting team that wants to score goals. We know the fans at Goodison like action in and around the goal area and it’s our duty to make that happen – and we have the players to do it.”
