Pickford Calls For Belief To Cure Away Blues

Jordan Pickford says Everton must show more belief on the road to replicate their home form following a 2-0 loss at Southampton.

The Blues were dealt a blow in their quest to climb the Premier League table as second-half goals from Stuart Armstrong and Shane Long consigned the visitors to defeat at St Mary's.

Everton had started the contest on the front foot before conceding the upper hand as the opening period wore on.

Similarly, Frank Lampard's side started the second half brightly until Armstrong's 52nd-minute opener swung the pendulum in the hosts' favour and Long's late header ensured all three points for the Saints.

"I think we started really well," said Pickford. "The first 10 minutes we had a couple of chances, but we just couldn’t continue that and we let Southampton grow into the game. We know, at their place, what a good team they are.

"It was a disappointing because we’ve had a couple of good results at Goodison since the new manager has come in. We just need to gel away from home – we can’t just rely on home games.

"It’s about coming away, standing up and getting results. We wanted to come away with something today, but Southampton were the better side.

"I think they grew into the game better than us. Unfortunately, it wasn’t our day, but as a group of players, we have to keep working hard on the training pitch and pick up results.

"We’ve got City next week – they’re the best team in the league but it’s about us being a unit and having that togetherness home and away to pick those results up."

LAMPARD'S VERDICT ON SAINTS REVERSE

Manager breaks down 2-0 defeat to Southampton at St Mary's.

Pickford made nine saves against Southampton, including an incredible point-blank stop to keep out Tino Livramento's effort in the first half.

But the England international insisted personal pride was not something on his mind.

"I felt I was in the moment," he added. "I was making saves, that’s what I’m there for, to help my teammates out and help the club out.

"All I want to so is to try my best to keep the ball out of the net – I conceded two today, so I’m not happy.

"It’s about picking ourselves up and going again next week now.

"We know our capabilities and we know the ability in the squad – it’s about picking those results up home and away and having that togetherness. I think we’ve got that."
