What The Papers Say - 17 February

The Liverpool Echo reflects on the quality performance of Seamus Coleman in the 3-0 win over Leeds United.

Speaking on the Royal Blue podcast, Echo reporter Chris Beesley spoke of his delight to see the Everton captain back on the scoresheet.

He analysed the right-back's display and hopes that Coleman can kick on this weekend with another standout showing for the Toffees.

“In terms of the attack, I think it would be remiss not to mention the man who was at right-back and scored the opening goal, Seamus Coleman, who rolled back the years," said Beesley.

“For somebody who has not scored for three years, or something like that, [it was overdue for] Seamus, who was a regular scorer and someone who revolutionised the position for Everton.

“It was a lovely moment for everybody. It was the first goal and it set them on the way and gave them the belief. But for Seamus as the captain to lead by example like that, he was putting his body on the line for Everton.

“It was two ends of the spectrum. A young lad like Anthony Gordon with his best days ahead and more encouragement for the future. But, yes, got to mention Seamus as well. It was absolutely fantastic and what you want from your captain.

“Frank Lampard just needs to find a version of Seamus Coleman, who is 10 years younger. That sort of character for the team coming forward.

"If we can get that Seamus Coleman for the rest of the season, then that it going to be a huge assist for Everton.”

Switching focus to international football, Foot Mercato reports that Abdoulaye Doucoure is currently in discussions to switch his national team allegiance to Mali.

The 29-year-old is currently tied to France, but hasn't made a senior appearance for the national side.

Should the request be approved, the Blues midfielder could appear in March's World Cup play-off against Tunisia.

Finally, a report coming from Italy's La Repubblica suggests that the Blues are facing competition in the race to sign for AC Milan's Rafael Leao.

The Portuguese forward has been linked with a move to Merseyside during the previous two transfer windows.

The latest report from the Italian outlet claims that Arsenal are now interested in the 22-year-old.

Leao has scored 23 goals in 100 appearances for Rossoneri, with his style of play compared to that of Thierry Henry.
