What The Papers Say - 16 February

Ahead of this weekend's trip to Southampton, The Athletic journalist Greg O'Keeffe discusses the development seen from Anthony Gordon this season.

“He’s gone on to another level, beyond the initial potential we saw," he stated on the All Together Now podcast.

"I think physically, he’s stronger. He looks more like a man out there now in terms of how he can win the ball back.

"His attitude is Everton, that’s what you want to see.

"That’s Everton, isn’t it? You know, a working-class lad who has got the ability, but he’s also got the effort, the passion.

“He has still got room to grow as well. Physically, I don’t think he’s fully there yet. Say, if you compare him to like Ross Barkley at his age, or even Wayne Rooney, I think Gordon will develop a bit more, but his ability – just fantastic."

ESPN's Ed Dove analyses Alex Iwobi's performance against Leeds United - and believes it was one of his finest so far for the Blues.

He believes Frank Lampard has helped boost the Nigerian's confidence.

"Iwobi's latest performance was one of his best for Everton since his big-money arrival from Arsenal in 2019, and he was influential as they ran out 3-0 winners," he wrote.

"Fuelled by Lampard's commitment to attacking, front-foot football, and the creativity and composure of new signing Donny van de Beek, the Toffees took the initiative from the off, with Iwobi appearing to be unshackled from the doubts and fears that had characterised his recent Everton displays.

"He excelled in a wide area, seeing a lot of the ball - no-one on the pitch had more touches - and creating five chances for the likes of Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin during the contest.

"Everton looked proactive and potent, and Iwobi actively sought to express himself, to cut inside, and to punish a Leeds defence that allowed the hosts space to operate.

"It seems the incoming coach understands the Nigerian is not a conventional byline winger but a player who is more effective when he can come inside, express himself between the lines, and get the best out of those players around him.

"He appeared to have his confidence back - a consequence, surely, of Lampard's encouragement behind the scenes."

The Liverpool Echo discusses the importance of building on last weekend's win over Leeds United.

Connor O'Neill writes: "Not since September have Everton won back-to-back Premier League games, and if that fact doesn't change soon then they will continue to look nervously over their shoulder.

"And that is exactly why Everton can’t afford to let history repeat itself this weekend. This Everton side needs to show that they are more than capable of pulling themselves away from danger.

"Failure to do that this weekend and it will be a case of another opportunity missed."

In transfer news, Yerry Mina has been linked with a move to Flamengo.

Torcedores reports the Brazilian side have made the Everton defender their top transfer target ahead of their season that begins in April.

Their source adds that the initial move would be on loan with an option to buy that includes a 50 percent sell-on clause.

The transfer window in Brazil closes on Saturday 12 April.
