My Hometown: Everton's Allan On Life In Rio

In a regular series for the Everton matchday programme, Toffees players give us an insight into the places they grew up and what makes them special.

In this instalment of My Hometown, Allan discusses his childhood in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil…

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Piscinão de Ramos, a poor community in Rio de Janeiro. I’m very proud of it. I learned a lot there about how to appreciate life and how tough it can be. Now I try to pass on to my children what I lived and learned.

Must-see attraction?

There are a few places I would recommend in Rio. The Christ the Redeemer statue is incredible. Also, Rio has many beautiful beaches.

Favourite dish?

It would have to be rice with beans. I also like steak and chips.

How would a young Allan spend his time there?

Playing football is what I loved to do the most, so I’d just be playing at the small football court close to my house. Mum would have to come out to send me home, otherwise I’d be there all day!

Are there any other famous footballers from your area?

At the moment there is João Gomes, a young midfielder who plays for Flamengo. He has got a great career ahead of him.

If you could take one Everton teammate to visit Rio, who would you take?

I would bring Andre [Gomes], because we share the same language. I’d take him to where I grew up and to Rio’s tourism spots. It’s a wonderful city.
