Lampard: We Must Feed Off Goodison Energy

Frank Lampard believes a united effort from fans and players can ignite another memorable Goodison Park occasion when Everton host Leeds United on Saturday afternoon.

Lampard kicked off his reign as Blues boss with a 4-1 FA Cup home victory over Brentford last weekend, with the Goodison faithful creating a deafening din as the Toffees overwhelmed the west London outfit.

Everton suffered a setback three days later with a Premier League defeat at Newcastle United and Lampard insists the squad are working with determination and focus to eradicate the mistakes made at St James’ Park.

The Everton manager underlined the key role the Blues’ passionate supporters will have at Goodison on Saturday – and insists his team must replicate the energy and intensity shown during his first game in charge.

“It’s important for the players to engage the fans,” Lampard told evertontv. “They will be there to back us.

“They understand the position we’re in and they know we need them.

“The players have to perform with the same attitude and approach as they did against Brentford at Goodison. I’m confident they will.

“It will be a tough match. It’s still early days for us as a group and we will work hard to put the Newcastle right.”

Lampard added his players must not allow the defeat at St James’ Park to dent confidence levels ahead of Saturday’s key meeting with Leeds.

A win this weekend would take Everton to within one point of Marcelo Bielsa’s team, with the Blues also having one game in hand.

“Since I’ve come in, we’ve seen one very good performance and a not-so-good one,” Lampard added.

“I said this to the players, if people thought that from coming into the difficult position we were in, that it would then be ‘win, win, win, win’ and we’d fly up the table, that’s not the reality of football.

“We have to remain confident and see the things we can do better and address that.

“In the tough moments we have to stick together as a club, and we have to look behind the scenes to see where we can get better.”

January transfer deadline day signing Dele and Donny van de Beek made their Everton debuts from the substitutes’ bench at Newcastle. Dele was introduced on 25 minutes following an injury to Demarai Gray, while van de Beek played the final half-hour of the contest.

Lampard believes the pair will benefit from their first taste of competitive action for the Blues and is convinced their qualities can elevate Everton collective performances.

“It was good for them to get minutes,” he said.  “I thought they both showed elements of their game that are going to benefit us.

“Longer term, they will get better – they will settle in with the Club and new teammates.

“It was a difficult game for them, but they’ll keep improving for us. They will both offer a lot.”
