What The Papers Say - 7 February

The Liverpool Echo publishes quotes with defender Mason Holgate after Everton began Frank Lampard's tenure with a 4-1 win over Brentford on Saturday.

The 25-year-old found the back of the net to secure the Club's spot in the fifth round of the FA Cup and reflected on what had been a great first week working with Lampard and his backroom staff.

“People around my age know exactly who he is,” said Holgate.

“When I was big enough to start watching football, the boss was always one of the best players and one you wanted to watch all the way through.

“With people like him and Ashley (Cole), when they come in you are a little bit in awe of them, really.

“He is a younger manager who is not out of the changing room too long so he comes in with a lot of new ideas in his coaching and what he has been doing is really enjoyable, to be fair.

“We have gone out and showed the confidence and the quality that we have got and it is something that the boss said.

“He told us he believed in the quality of the squad and we showed we have got that in us (with this result). But we have got to keep working on what we are going to do.”

The Athletic reacted to Saturday's impressive win - and reporter Greg O’Keeffe spotted a key difference with Lampard pre-match compared to previous Everton managers.

He wrote: “Things were different from before the kick-off. Unlike his predecessors, Lampard was out there personally supervising the warm-up drills, yelling instructions and offering encouragement.

“It sent the players a hands-on message: this is a manager prepared to offer the direct interaction and presence."

Finally, it is claimed Everton will miss out on rumoured transfer target Kalidou Koulibaly this summer.

Previous reports stated the Blues were interested in the Senegal international, who won the Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday evening.

However, Italian outlet CalcioNews24 believes the 30-year-old is set to accept Napoli's contract extension and remain in Italy.
