Roberts: Intensity And Drive Key For Everton Success

Interim manager Chris Roberts has challenged Everton Women to bring the “intensity, drive and focus” shown throughout training this week into Sunday’s clash with Reading at Walton Hall Park (1pm GMT).

Roberts also praised the unity within the squad and is convinced a positive result against the Royals can spark an extended upturn in form.

The Scot will be taking the charge of the Blues alongside fellow interim manager Claire Ditchburn, following the departure of Jean-Luc Vasseur earlier this week.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday, Roberts explained how raising confidence levels has been a priority during preparations at USM Finch Farm.

“I’m working with an outstanding group of players,” he said. “I know exactly what is required to help us get back up the league table.

“The focus and intensity and drive the players have shown in training this week has been incredible. I think the players have enjoyed the sessions we’ve had.

“Confidence is something we’ve spoken about a lot. We want the players to be playing on the front foot and showcasing what we are about.

“The squad are very strong as a unit, they look after each other. The dressing room is full of good people and top players and I know I can rely on them.

“The strength of the group is the togetherness we’ve got.”

ROBERTS SPEAKS TO MEDIA AHEAD OF READING

Everton Women interim manager Chris Roberts spoke to the media ahead of Sunday's Barclays FA Women's Super League match at home to Reading.

Roberts revealed “no timeframe” has been put on how long he and Ditchburn will be in charge for, adding: “I know the Club will do everything they can to make the best possible appointment.”

Everton recorded a convincing 3-0 victory over Reading when the sides met in Berkshire in early October.

The Royals have not tasted defeat in the WSL since that game, however, embarking on a seven-match unbeaten streak which has included a 1-0 victory over reigning champions Chelsea.

They sit sixth in the league table – four places above Everton – and Roberts insists the Toffees will have to be at their best to take maximum points from Sunday’s game.

“Since we played Reading earlier in the season, they have been in a run of good form,” he said.

“They are so well organised, they’re very aggressive and are a front-foot attacking team. It will be our job on Sunday to nullify that.

“Right now, it’s about results. The league table doesn’t lie. It’s not where we want to be.

“We are only halfway through the campaign, though, and there is a lot of football to be played.

“We still have the opportunity to rectify the problems we have had, get the results we need, and move up the table.”
