Turner: Any Team Can Be Beaten In This League

Everton defender Danielle Turner is confident the Blues are capable of taking points away from their clash with reigning Barclays FA Women’s Super League champions Chelsea this weekend.

The Londoners make the trip to Walton Hall Park on Sunday (1pm GMT) in what will be first match of the calendar year for both sides, with COVID-19 outbreaks heavily impacting last weekend’s scheduled fixtures.

One of the matches that was able to be played saw bottom-placed Birmingham City beat league leaders Arsenal 2-0 for their first league win of the season.

Turner highlighted that result as evidence of the unpredictable nature of the WSL - and believes nothing in guaranteed in the league.

“The games that went ahead last weekend, you saw some big results,” the defender told evertonfc.com.

“It was all credit to Birmingham for their performance against Arsenal, they really deserved their win.

“Bottom against top, anyone can beat anyone in this league.

“For us, we’re a bit lower than where Chelsea are at currently, nevertheless we are looking to take points off them and give our supporters something to cheer about for their first game of the new year.”

After the disruption of a COVID outbreak in the Everton camp upon the return from the winter break, normality has now resumed in training at USM Finch Farm.

And Turner expects the Chelsea camp to be as eager as the hosts to get back to competitive action.

“We know in previous seasons that we can give Chelsea a good game and we can beat them on the day,” the 30-year-old continued.

“It was a disappointing blow for us at the start of the season when we went to London and were unable to bring points with us back up the road.

“We gave away cheap goals that day and we must ensure that doesn’t happen on Sunday.

“Chelsea are a top side, the strength in depth that they possess in their squad shows that they have threats from all over the park, so we have to be at the top of our game to nullify that.

“It will be a tough game, but we’ll head out onto the pitch at Walton Hall Park ready to give it our all because we want to start this new year on a positive note.”

Sunday will be the Toffees' first match on home soil for more than a month and Turner is keen to be reunited with Evertonians, who, she insists, make a significant difference for the players on the pitch.

“When the supporters get behind us, they really help us like they did in the game against Manchester United in the league for example," she added.

“Hopefully they will be out in force again this weekend because we’re going to need them against a really top Chelsea side.

“We’re all looking forward to getting back on our own pitch and get back playing games again.”
