Doucoure Relishing Hectic Festive Schedule

Abdoulaye Doucoure is relishing Everton's busy schedule and targeting a season-defining successful run over the festive period.

The Blues face a trip to Burnley on Boxing Day before hosting Newcastle United on 30 December and Brighton & Hove Albion three days later.

After an impressive start to the current Premier League campaign, a spate of injuries to key players coincided with a dip in form for the Toffees.

But, following a gutsy 1-1 draw at the home of European champions Chelsea last time out, Doucoure insists there is a determination within the squad to build momentum and climb up the league table during the hectic end-of-year schedule.

"Of course, it's been a difficult season so far, especially with the injuries we've had," said the energetic Frenchman. "We're starting to get some players back now and I think the team is improving but we have to do better to be in a better position.

"We are positive and we have the belief.

"You can see the players fighting for each other for every result. We want to go on a good run but we know it's important to do the basics right and start winning games consistently.

"We still have the belief we can have a good season.

"It's going to be a very important period - we know the Christmas period can have a big impact on how successful your season can be.

"I've been [in England] for five years, so I'm used to it... I know Christmas is very important for English people and it's a busy period for everybody in football - I love it.

"To be fair, I like to play every game, I enjoy playing every three days... Less training, more games!

"There are more chance to win games and enjoy that feeling.

"If you have a good run through Christmas, you can quickly climb the table and find yourself in a strong position."

Doucoure's midfield role has evolved since the arrival of manager Rafa Benitez in the summer, with the energetic 28-year-old's remit being widened to be more of a threat in an attacking capacity.

Early-season performances, which saw Doucoure rack up two goals and four assists from the opening seven games, earned plaudits from Evertonians and pundits alike.

A foot injury sustained against West Ham in mid-October - a problem that would see Doucoure sidelined for a month - halted that impressive run of form. However, his importance to the team has been underlined since his return to full fitness.

The 2020 summer recruit has played every single minute of match action since making his comeback against Brentford at the end of November - and he now has his sights on increasing his contributions at the top end of the pitch.

"Of course, I want more of this," added Doucoure. "I know I have this in my locker - to keep scoring goals.

"I want to keep it going, get some assists as well and help the team as much as I possibly can.

"I am looking forward to the challenges that are ahead."
