International Recap: Blues On Target

The final international break for 2021 has come to a close and it has been one to remember for several stars of Everton Women.

From hat-tricks to clean sheets and emphatic wins in between, here’s the full recap from October’s international break.

Denmark

Rikke Sevecke’s Denmark continued their winning run in World Cup qualifying with two victories.

The Everton defender started both matches as her side earned a clean sheet away to Bosnia and Herzegovina in a 3-0 win, before being denied a second as Russia scored late in a 3-1 home win for the Danes.

England (First Team, Under-23s, Under-19s)

The Lionesses continued their dominant run of performances over the international break as Sandy MacIver helped the squad prepare for back-to-back matches at home.

MacIver was named on the bench for both matches as England beat Austria 1-0 before bettering October’s 10-0 away win against Latvia with an astonishing 20-0 victory against the same opponents.

There were four different hat-trick scorers with former Everton midfielder, Jill Scott also getting on the scoresheet.

The under-23s also enjoyed a convincing result as Gabby George struck the back of the net and picked up a clean sheet in 11-0 win in a friendly with Estonia.

Club teammate Megan Finnigan was part of the squad that trained in the week leading up to the friendly encounter and was named amongst the substitutes.

Meanwhile in the under-19s, Grace Clinton, Faye Kirby and Marcie Fields travelled to Portugal for the Algarve Cup.

Clinton completed both matches as the Blues midfielder helped her side battle back from 3-0 down to win 4-3 against Norway, having scored a hat-trick in the process.

However, it was a closer encounter against the Dutch as England were narrowly beaten 1-0.

Kirby came into the game for the final 10 minutes, meanwhile Fields trained with the squad throughout the week to prepare for both encounters.

France

French duo Valérie Gauvin and Kenza Dali both found themselves on the scoresheet over the international break.

Dali started for France during a 6-0 win over Kazakhstan as Gauvin came off the bench to slot home a spot-kick to make it five.

Her Clubmate got on the act two minutes later to score Les Blues' sixth of the night.

Gauvin was rested for the following encounter against Wales, meanwhile Dali came on for the final 25 minutes to see off their sixth win of the World Cup qualifying campaign.

Northern Ireland

Simone Magill continued her electric Club form while on international duty, enjoying back-to-back wins over North Macedonia.

The Everton forward slotted four goals past the hosts in an 11-0 win before being victorious again in a 9-0 home encounter.

In front of the home support, Magill slotted her seventh goal in four games for Club and country, while assisting four other strikes on Monday night.

Magill also played 90 minutes in both matches, the first time she has been able to achieve this since April 2021 due to injury.

Republic of Ireland

Courtney Brosnan started both matches for the Republic of Ireland over the break.

Firstly, the Everton goalkeeper helped her side earn a valuable point in a 1-1 draw at home to Slovakia before enjoying an emphatic 11-0 win over Georgia.

The result means Ireland remain second in their qualifying group with four games left to play.

Scotland

Lucy Graham started for Scotland in a 1-1 draw against Ukraine at Hampden Park in Glasgow before coming off the bench at half time for a 8-0 defeat away to Spain.

Claire Emslie was originally part of the group that prepared for the match against Ukraine but returned to USM Finch Farm earlier than expected and was not involved in the preparations for Spain.
