The Blues boss insisted his team must “stick together and be strong” and approach their upcoming games “with confidence”.

Everton return to Premier League action against Brentford on Sunday, before hosting Liverpool in a Merseyside derby clash at Goodison Park on Wednesday 1 December.

Benitez also outlined how Demarai Gray’s fitness will be assessed after he was forced off injured on 17 minutes in the game at Etihad Stadium.

"The offensive players, they could be a threat [v City]," he added. "To lose Demarai Gray, he was training really well and in form, meant we had more problems in the counter-attack.

"We will see how long he is [out for]. We have to deal with that. Injuries are a problem for us at the moment.

“Hopefully we can bring some players back, go to January with some points and then start thinking about solutions."

Spanish publication Sport, meanwhile, suggests Everton could make a move for Barcelona defender Arnau Comas.

The highly-rated 21-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season.

Leicester City are also credited with an interest in Comas.
